Free agent RB Derrick Ward announced his retirement from football on Tuesday.
Perhaps best known for his role in the Giants' Earth, Wind and Fire backfield of 2008, Ward parlayed a career-year of 1,025 rushing yards into a four-year, $17 million contract with the Bucs a couple of months later. After washing out in Tampa as a free-agent bust, Ward enjoyed a solid bounce-back season as Arian Foster's backup in Houston only to be bypassed by Ben Tate in 2011. Ward closes out his nine-year career with 2,628 rushing yards and a stout average of 4.8 yards on 551 carries.

Running back years aren't quite like gymnast or figure skater years but they are close.

32 is young for a writer or businessman but for a tailback it's retirement time.

Sad day. He seemed like an upstanding veteran. I'm surprised the Texans didn't want him back. He was solid in fill-in spots and I think our non-trade of Tate showed how highly Gary values the running game.

hey remember when he had ron dayne and chris brown as running backs, starters none the less.

Ward was nice to have around, even wanted to be on special teams. How long before he has his own radio show on 790?
