Last night on the Daily Show the writer of the new book about the hunt for Bin Laden said that they actually didn't know for sure that Bin Laden was there because they could never get eyes on him. This was a riskier decision than Republicans want to make it out to be. Gates was against sending people in and one of Obama's top military advisers wanted to just drop a bomb on the compound.
That is what the whole debate is about. Nobody suggested that Bin Laden was spotted. They had an individual in the compound they strongly suspected was Bin Laden but could never confirm his face. They knew his wives were there and his close operatives were running in and out.
Dropping a bomb in the middle of a city in Pakistan is not the best of ideas. If that happened, we would have never known if Bin Laden was there, even if his body was intact.
