Landlord Landry - I'm going to be very busy this weekend, working inside of my garage this time. pmac - I guess it is a compliment...but there are hard workers in every race. TreeMac - ... ....read the end of moestavern19's post "I think what you need to understand that negative stereotype and preconceived notion has lead to bigotry and oppression throughout history, sure it makes for great stand-up comedy fodder in this day and age, but you should probably be careful before judging those books by their covers." I didn’t want this to become an argument or a thread to jump on Tree-Mac either. He gave his honest answer. I am over it now and was wanting feedback from all of my fellow CF Members.....
If I encountered a huge man of any race in the middle of the night on an empty street, I think it'd make me a little nervous. My reaction, in honesty, may be slightly tweaked by race, but would probably be more greatly affected by other things like demeanor, dress, context, etc.
you're right. If I saw a huge (any race) man in the middle of the night on an empty street.. if he was wearing a suit and tie and looked calm/lost/something that made sense, that wouldn't make me nervous. If I saw a huge (any race0 man in the middle of the night on an empty street who was wearing tattered clothing, had a bunch of tattoos, bling everywhere, and most importantly looked pissed off or like he was looking for a fight or something (or just aggravated).. that would make me nervous. Given those 2 extremes, I can't see race mattering in how I'd feel.
As a woman, I have to be on a constant lookout for potential incidents that are committed by men such as robbery, assault, rape and murder. The chances of a woman committing those crimes against a woman are much lower than men. When I am out alone at night driving or shopping, I keep an eye out for any guy that may be targeting me. When the guy(specific races) that is dressed thuggish will make me to react quickly for any potential attack. I just have to be on my guard for EVERY man that is dressed thuggish or not and observe his demanor. You never know that a well dressed man could attack me, i.e. Ted Bundy. I apologize if this post offends some people but I have been mugged at gunpoint by two blacks who were dressed thuggish.. This incident definitely shapes my reaction to people who are dressed thuggish.
Things that happen to you or people you know well will always shape your initial reactions.. it's human nature. Can't fault you for that.
All these stereotypes about THUGS and people DRESSED a certain way... like peeps dressed WELL can't rob you AT ALL... Would ya'll please stop picking on these FASHIONISTAS? Anyway, I'm off to the Salvation Army to buy me a hand-me-down suit so I can rob people who think I won't rob them at gunpoint 'cuz I'm "educated..." Peace! "welcome to 'Stereotype or Just Ignorant... on Afternoon Yak... with your host, BigMouth Lana..." Lana - "MEN." [audience] - "BOOOO!!!!!"
It has nothing to do with her past experience. If you dress like a punk, expect others to react to it, regardless of race.
Doesn't matter what they look like...in that situation I assume anyone walking down an empty street in the middle of the night is up to no good.
and remember folks.... The eyes are the groin of the head. this message brought to you by Stranger Danger
Pretty much the exact same thing happened to my scraggly looking white self a few years ago when I lived in West U. Was trimming up the oaks in the front yard with ladder, chainsaw, ropes & all that, & had the log splitter sitting in the driveway to turn a bid dead limb into bbq wood. Mercedes drives by, slows, parks a couple of doors down & lady comes over asking if I do this for a living. "Nope, but whatcha need?" 4 hours of playing with my toys & drinking a couple of suds later & I had $400 in pocket. For the tree work, ya preverts.
Crickey!!! If you called me a bushman it would mean I probably have a beard like ZZ Top and live in the middle of no where eating stuff that crawls out from under a rock! By the way, any soap dodging Poms here with bad teeth? See, my generalizations have a more internaional feel.
I would have got angry a little just like you did but after a while I wouldn't have let it got to me. I think it was ignorant for her to think that about you just becasue of your race, but thats the type of world we live in today. I had something like that happen to me a few years back. I had this job where I was doing construction work for this company. I was the only black guy working there the rest of the workers was white. Well One day I was riding with two of my co-wokers and we seen a black dude come out of our office where we would go before we head off to work. As soon as one of my co-workers saw him he than looked at me and said its that one of your boys? Do you know him? My reply was naw I don't know that dude and why would I becasue we're both black? Of course my co-worker said that wasn't the reason why he said that, but I knew it was.
