and Smokey: GOODBYE, then. I gotta go find some nice web sites to point out to you... you've got no more business in here if you are going to be whining like that. Thanks for pointing him out to me, VesceySux. He's been on my radar and I have been reading his whine. In fact, he'll be on my signature pretty soon. I can see him jumping the bandwagon in a few years. "If I am going to beome a Texans fan..." tells me everything. Thank you. DON'T EVER root for my teams to fail. EVER.
I'm not necessarily on the side of the Texans brass. I'm on two main sides here. 1.) The side that says you can't judge either player after two or three games. These are players whose careers will likely stretch at least a decade; I'm on whatever side supports not declaring one player a bust and another a Hall of Famer before they've had any kind of meaningful sample size in the league at all. Besides, it's not as if Reggie is tearing apart the league himself with his 3.4 YPC and his 6 carries for 5 yards last weekend. Yes, he makes catches... so what? Third down scatbacks who can catch the ball out of the backfield are a dime a dozen. Reggie's going to ultimately be judged by his ability running the football and his ability to make big plays. So far, he has no touchdowns and his running has been below the league average. I'm not saying that will hold - I expect Reggie to be a good back - but it's not like these first three weeks have been a contrast of Sam Bowie/Michael Jordan proportions. Mario might look like Sam Bowie, but Reggie is a long way from Jordan. 2.) The side that says the Texans have tons of problems. You could put Walter Payton in his prime in our backfield, and we'd still be 0-3. I'm against the oversimplification of this season being a result of the first overall pick. People and in this thread and in others say that the Texans deserve what they're getting because they blew the No. 1 pick. That, to me, hints that things would be different if they had taken Reggie with the No. 1 pick. Things wouldn't be different. Complaining is acceptable, even though I think it's premature. What isn't acceptable is ignoring all the other numerous problems on this team and focusing all the attention on this one selection. It's a lot more complex than the "should've taken Reggie" attitude that some people have.
posts like this make me think some of you guys are out of your minds. complaining is acceptable when your team is on pace to be the worst defense in the history of the nfl. thanks for being so accepting.
of course it is; “should’ve taken reggie,” however, is the pinnacle of the organization’s ineptness. seven years to get it right and it’s the worst expansion franchise since the NFL/AFL merger. in a league that stresses parity, they are the NFL’s version of the clippers; a flaccid, consistently stupid franchise that has grown more and more irrelevant even in a football-crazy town. no, reggie bush doesn’t solve all of their problems any more than mario williams is causing them. what reggie would have brought, however, that mario never will is time. doing the right thing and placating what had to that point been a patient and understanding fan base would have given kubiak and his staff some protection to tear this thing down and start over. people would have bought into that with bush. and it’s not like bush would have been a bad pick. the team further mucked things up by shawshanking the process leading up to the draft in which they came off as a bumbling, disorganized, deer-caught-in-the-headlights mess of a franchise led by a lame duck/jack ass of a figurehead who smelled like smarmy. interestingly, on the same weekend the texans slid closer to insignificance, nearly 150k fans were basking in the glow of a remarkable homestead courtesy of the astros, who are ready to make another down payment on our undying loyalty. as clemens soaked up another standing ovation in front of his hometown fans and a nationwide audience, the difference in the two franchises was stark and unavoidable. one owner gets it; the other doesn’t.
You're taking it out of context. If you read the entire paragraph, it's pretty obvious I was talking about complaining about taking Mario Williams first overall. I wasn't talking about complaining in general or the defense in general. Thanks for reading so carefully.
yeah you're right, mario williams has nothing to do with the defense. I took that completely out of context.
The defense sucks. That's logical to complain about. Mario Williams has had all of three professional games, out of what will likely be more than 300 in his career. It's not too logical, imo, to decide the guy's entire career with this small of a sample size. That's why it's premature.
I do see your point and I most certainly agree with your position. It is very disturbing to see some of the Texans' "fans" become so frustrated with the current state of affairs and turn on them in the manner that Aces has done. These folks are frustrated and angry because they have waited YEARS for good football to return to Houston and instead, they have the ghost of bad Oiler football. I have felt that feeling - the feeling of absolute helplessness of being unable to do nothing but watch the team you love become a joke and a disgrace. I guess I'm coming from a different place than most everyone else. You see, I was living in Houston during those long ago days of Oiler football ineptness and futility. I admit that I'm seeing the same thing from the Texans on the field but this time I can see and feel a distinct difference because Bob McNair is NOT Bud Adams and Kubiak is NOT Ed Biles, Jerry Glanville or Bill Peterson so I'm willing to cut them a bit of slack and give them a chance to build this team. I say build instead of rebuild because IMO, this team was never properly built to begin with. BTW, I'm right there with you on Greg Davis. By keeping him on, Mack Brown is denying a COMPETENT and QUALIFIED person a job.
In all fairness guys, anyone that complains about Sunday's excuse for lack of performance by the Texans is sane, not insane. The first two games, I kind of just passed them off, but to get your ass waxed by Mark "p***y foot" Brunell and that sorry assed masquerade for a defense. Sorry, there is NO f**king excuse! Period. Unfortunately, the problem here appears to be far more than surface level, especially on defense. Thomas Johnson should be cut and more to follow who think just "going through the motions" is acceptable. Kuby has to get their attention and I am certain he will. This reclamation project is akin to the losing atmosphere from the the Bengals a few years ago. Marvin Lewis had to do a job and so does Kuby. But, frankly this is the COLD HARD TRUTH! After that performance, we have the WORST defense in the NFL. Not one of the worst, the freakin WORST! The scores do not even closely mimic the ass beating that has taken place on the field for the first 3 games. After 3 games, we would be better suited to play some upscale, playoff bound High School teams or also-ran college teams. Sorry, it is what it is and until this team actually shows up, cant criticize anyone on this board for dropping their 2 cents worth.
look, I supported the williams pick, and I'm still behind the guy, but do you guys realize that brunell was sacked six times the previous week. you can't defend that when mario doesn't even get pressure. I don't know how peppers started out, but being a titans fan after they left I watched every game of jevon kearse's rookie year and that dude had an immediate impact. he was a top pass rusher his first year, his first few games. jevon kearse and steve mcnair were probably the top two reasons that team went to the superbowl his rookie.
doesn't the blame for it never being properly built in the first place rest with mcnair? so, let's see, so far he's 0-1 in GMs; 0-1 in HCs; and 0-2 in 1st round picks in terms of putting them in position to succeed. mario will fight an uphill battle in this town his entire career; same one carr's been fighting. the franchise's first four years and three games have been a travesty.
I don't expect miracles but one thing that I won't tolerate is this loser mentality that the Texans have embraced. They have become comfortable losing and that has got to change. If Kubiak does anything this week, he has to shake things up and kick some asses off this team. Thomas Johnson should be headed to the warehouse or lumberyard of his choice. Parcells would have pulled his helmet off and beat him silly with it after costing them 6 points and a chance to get back into the game. Mario had better get his head out of his ass or he should be benched. It's time for Carr to start earning that $8 million and start acting like a leader. Get into somebody's face if they screw up a play. And if I hear Steve McKinney joking on Sportsradio 610 one more time I will personally fly to Houston and shoot him myself. They are acting like losers and hence, they will continue to be losers.
Right now you cant defend a team that doesnt even bother to show up. The entire D should do windsprints until they puke. Because, they would probably show the greatest hustle of the week 'cause Sunday was a joke and I'm not laughing. Agreed. David has to light some fires under asses on both sides, right now his numbers show effort. The receivers are doing a decent job. As for the rest of the team, they're practically invisible especially the D.
Oh I agree! McNair screwed the pooch from the get-go. He reached into the good ol' boys network and selected Dom (and Casserly) when there was a Marvin Lewis or Lovie Smith or Brad Childress or Eric Mangini or Gary Kubiak out there. He reached into the recycled coaching bin and wound up getting exactly what he deserved. To his credit, he did the right thing and cleaned house (which is something that Uncle Les has yet to do over at the TC). This is where he's different from Bud Adams. If Bud owned this team, Joe Pendry would now be your new head coach. Hey, he's new at this NFL owner gig and he will make mistakes. As long as he doesn't repeat them ad nausem (ala Bud & Les), then I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.
What are you talking about? The only thing that is harder than starting a franchise is starting a franchise with a head coach who has had ZERO experience as a head coach. Lewis and Smith have been great coaches for their teams, but their situation with their team is completely different had they been with the expansion Texans. Eric Mangini? Do you know that Mangini is 35? That means he would have been 30 had we hired him, that alone would have been the most the dumbest mistake McNair could have made. Dom Capers was actually a pretty good smart at the time. Dom already had experience with an expansion franchise and actually did a pretty good job, highlighted by a 12-4 season. Casserly on the other hand just showed to be a terrible move no matter how you look at it.
