My brother got mugged tonight

Wow, I use to live around that area. It used to be a nice neighborhood but it's really starting to go down in the past few years.

Damn, sorry to hear about that. I eat at that CiCi's all the time, so I'll be aware of my surroundings next time I'm there. I thought that area was a safe part of town. I guess not.

 

i got mugged when i lived in guatemala (last year for 6 months). 4 guys surrounded me and started yellin at me and stuff. i was just learnin spanish and could only understand a bit - but i knew they wanted my money. well...i had about $100 American on me...but i also had a fake wallet...so i gave them that...threw it past them...and ran like mad for about 20 minutes.

 

A couple months ago, my friend was walking home to her apartment a few blocks away, from a review session on campus, and some guy came up from behind her and started walking with her and talking with her. He kept saying how she looked nice, he liked her body shape, she's a very intelligent girl, etc etc... She ended up giving him her common name, which thankfully isn't her legal name, and saying good night and running upstairs to her neighbor.

At least she was smart enough not to give out her real name, or to run to her real apartment, but I told her that she was a fool for not calling her boyfriend on her cell (or anyone else for that matter) and telling him what was happening.

It's a good idea to HAVE your cell on you in case of some scary situation such as this, but TALKING on it all the way home is an invitation for someone to catch you off guard. So especially ladies out there, remember to have your cell ready to call someone if you feel uncomfortable, but don't let it become your attack point.

 

Damn...that's a pretty nice area. There's some apartments nearby, but otherwise it's all upper/middle class. Glad he's alright.

 

Probably a good move to turn over the cash.....if he was willing to take on a 400 lber he either really had a gun or was hopped up on some serious pharmecuticals...either way could have made for a lot more than two bucks worth of trouble.

 

My relatives owned a grocery shop near bellaire and my mom was working as a cashier just to help out my aunt, well she got robbed by a man who walks in and asks for her to empty the register. And he had something pointing out of his shirt that looked like a gun, well she emptied it out, but slid the big bills to the side. All put together we lost like 150 dollars, but my mom was freaked out for months... And the wierdest thing is that he took off on foot, and the cops who got there in like 2 mins couldnt get this guy...

Just knowing how close we can get to death makes every moment that much more precious.

 

I definitely think that the apartments are what's bringing the neighborhood down. But I can't really complain, those apartments are what allowed me to go to school over there till freshmen year, when we bought a town house nearby.

 

I was at hollywood video right there today and also ate at General Joe's which is also right next to that. I grew up in that area and its not at all a bad area.... sounds like some punk ass kids that think they are hot **** driving around. Situations like that you just give them whatever they want and try and get their license plate numbers. If you catch the number, you pay them a little visit of your own and show them how badass they really are.

i grew up in this area and live there now. there is so little crime in this area that when something happens, everyone freaks out. the little area papers get all abuzz about it...and community action groups get all worked up.

 

Man, I feel for you.

I've had a gun pulled on me twice and my reactions were different both times.

Back in my hitchhiking days (seeing America after living overseas) a gun was pulled on me. Didn't even bother me...emotionally. I guess I was leading a rough life then.

Some years later, while in the army, I was visiting a friend in a trailer park and the owner of the park ran up pointing his gun at me, threatening my life. SCARED me to death. I was completely emotionally torn up for a couple of days. Had the BAD shakes after the incindent.

I guess what I'm trying to say is you never know how you're going to react. You just never know.

So, I feel for you.

This one made me laugh. It's ridiculous. Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling them in to their vans? What statistics do they have that say vans are the preferred vehicle of serial killers? This guy has been watching too many movies.

Also the rate of death by serial killing has to be among the bottom of the list of causes of death. Add to that death by serial killer who drives a van is also way down on the list.

 

That's just how those people work. I grew up in the small Thornwood on Memorial and Eldridge and the mothers are infamous for going ape **** over nothing.

I sort of got mugged once. I was working the door at a bar, and this huge fight broke out ( long sotry, didn't directly involve me) inside the bar, and as we got it outside it exploded into a street brawl, and 6 or 7 cop cars showed up; and I was swinging away, and didn't get a scratch. Was ducking and sliding at all the right times, and generally felt like a god.


So an hour or so later, I'm walking home ( it's about 3-4 in the AM) in a not great neighbourhood, with my walkman on, feeling pretty good about things, and these three stringy druggie looking guys are coming coming up on the sidewalk to my right. In that tunnel perspective you get with a walkman, I just gave them a sort of nod as we passed each other and wasn't even thinking about htem when WHAM! Something hits my face. For a second I can't figure out what's happened, and as I'm pulling off my earphones I get clouted in the side of the head.

So I turn around and these 3 guys have spread out, and are telling me they want my walkman. In one of those moments inspired by machismo, I tell them to forget it, take it off, put it on the newspaper machines behind me, and get ready to rumble. As I said these guys were stringy, and I was in great shape and used to fighting ( boxing, karate, bouncing, etc.), so I'm doing ok for a while, but soon it becomes clear that I can't keep it up; for every shot I'm sending out, 3are coming back, and I'm getting tired. These guys are also on acid or soemthing, cause they're not really feeling some pretty hard shots, even though one's nose is broken.


I kick one in the side of the knee to put him doen for a bit, abd grab another by the thraot and throw hiom down and start pummeling him on the ground, but as this takes me down on top of him, I'm now being kicked repeatedly by the 3rd guy, and the 2nd guy is limping over to get involved. My left hand is on the guy on the ground's throat, and my right is punching him, so I'm not really warding anything off anymore. Just as i realise that my energy is just about up, and soon I'm gonna be on the ground curled up in a ball getting stomped, these capbs all pull up and jump out and the two guys on top run/limp away. I'm having a hard time breathing, so I let the guy on the ground up, and he screams he's gonna sue me (!??!!) and takes off too, with the cabbies yelling at him.

This one cabbie offers me a free ride home, and on the way he's telling me how well I was doing 3-1. I destroy the myth by admitting that, had they not come, I was about to get destoyed. To this day I think that, considering the state of these guys, and the damage I'd done, and the fact that I am sure my energy was just about completely up, if those cabbies hadn't shown up when they did, I would have been seriously hurt, and quite likely killed. I'm not a macho guy at rest, but in moments of action I somehow revert, and that hasn't changed all that much, unfortunately, since then, but it's made the post action realisation/fear a lot more profound. It happened to me on a night I felt invulnerable, when I was in great shape and could take care of myself. It can happen anytime, and I know that now.

 

I had a similar experience after a car wreck. Every time I closed my eyes, I'd replay the experience in my head. It had faded in about a week. Funny thing is that I was once mugged at gun-point, but it somehow was not very traumatic for me.

 

Macbeth, dont you know that a Walkman isnt worth it... but an Ipod, welll id go down fighting.
