Sounds like I'm in the minority, but I really liked this trade.

I am down with the trade. Get off the mediocrity treadmill. If it means the Rockets have to take one step back to take two steps forward then so be it.

I guess it is worth asking in this thread, did we create a trade exception in the Lowry trade? How about the Dally or Bud trades?

The Rockets are under the cap so trade exceptions aren't created. They created cap room though, about $4.25 million.

BIMA mentioned in the original Lowry thread there was a WAY to create a TPE if certain moves were conducted in a certain order.

Yeah, good breakdown by Bima... I did ask specifically though someone who would know and was told they were under the cap and it didn't apply. Would not put it past the Rockets to get creative though.

Agree 100 percent. If this deal had happened last week, fans would be celebrating.
People are just freaking out because both our point guards are gone, but like Jerome Solomon pointed out, it's only July 7th -- or thereabouts.

No worries with the trade in itself. I just don't see the point in going after Howard when he doesn't want to be here.

Chris Webber didn't want to go to the Kings. Deron Williams didn't want to go to New Jersey.

Question - Assume for a second we trade for Howard and Hedo in exchange for martin's expiring, young players, and draft picks......where does that put our cap situation next offseason? I ask because if we want any chance to resign Howard we better have enough cap space to offer J. Smith or C. Paul to join him otherwise why in the hell would he stay here?

I think this is what Morey has wanted to do all along but finally got the go ahead from Les. We are finally in a true rebuilding stage. Now we need to bring in young talent or get Howard. I love lowry's game but like clutch said he will never bring us a championship and that is what we are after.

I agree with Clutch. I don't understand everything Morey has done but he has made this team substantially more flexible throughout his tenure. I actually would want the Rockets to rebuild especially with the young players with potential on our roster and 1st round picks. Dwight Howard would be really nice but there is too much uncertainty with him staying here and his back. Plus if for some reason Morey can't create a solid championship contender cast around Dwight Howard then he is more likely to bolt then stay in my opinion.

I say rebuild by playing the young players, trade Martin and Scola at the trade deadline for future picks, and hope to draft well in 2013 and 2014.

2013: Try to get Cody Zeller or Shabazz Muhammod, think Nerlens Noel will be just ok
2014: Go for Andrew Wiggins or Jabari Parker...these are superstars in the making and well worth rebuilding for

Bah.....Webb stayed because of the TEAM they had around him.

If we trade all of our team for Howard....what's his incentive to stay playing with the 4 Dwarfs and himself?

It might actually be worse if we do get Dwight. I can see it now, we package this pick, our own and some other stuff for Howard. He comes here, there's no supporting cast because the team has been gutted. We're still not that good and before Morey can try to put pieces back in place, Dwight bolts because he didn't want to be here to begin with and we're not good enough to make him want to stay. Now we don't have Howard or any of the picks we traded for him that could've helped us rebuild. Sounds like a plan.

Yes, actually. In the Dalembert trade, we get an exception for about 2.5 million. In the Budinger trade, we got an exception for about 900K.

We likely used the Dalembert exception to acquire Forbes, which would allow us to have a ~5.7m trade exception created by trading Lowry for nothing.

But here's where it gets tricky:

You can essentially only have either cap room, or trade exceptions. In order to sign Asik and Lin, we will have to renounce our exceptions. So they won't matter. If Asik and Lin are both matched, we could unrenounce them.

Great article, Clutch. You touched on what's my biggest question -- what do we do if it's not Howard? I will be really disappointed if we go and acquire a 2nd tier star just for the sake of it.

Well said Clutch. Couldn't agree more. Savvy move and hopefully they all add up to something big. I def agree that if they fail to land the big fish AND instead add just Gasol or Smith, than it was all for nothing. Still, the message is go big or go home. I'm reserving judgment on our off season until all moves have been completed.

Not sure I agree except on the Howard part. If we don't get him by now this offseason will most likely be a failure. And LA seems like the front runner now.
