I looked up his resume and didnt realize that he did so many different things. This poll is ONLY for the movies he directed, but the man has been a great writer and producer as well.

Well, the list of films he's directed (according to imdb.com) is much shorter than I imagined:
* Curly Sue (1991)
* Uncle Buck (1989)
* She's Having a Baby (1988)
* Planes, Trains & Automobiles (1987)
* Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)
* Weird Science (1985)
* The Breakfast Club (1985)
* Sixteen Candles (1984)

Man...it's really difficult for me to choose between Ferris Bueller and The Breakfast Club. Dammit...

I guess I'll go with...hmmmmmmmm...

Ferris Bueller's Day Off. There...I said it.

...I feel dirty...

As fun as Ferris Bueller's Day Off is, I think kids identify more with The Breakfast Club. Think about how many tv shows and movies attempt to deconstruct high school. Was The Breakfast Club the first? Probably not, but I can't remember otherwise.

Didn't he do Home Alone? That shouldn't be excluded. I couldn't argue with Ferris Bueller or Uncle Buck though. Buck takes it by a nose.

I'll bet John Candy would still be making good movies if he were still around. He'd be closer to Bill Murray than Chevy Chase, success-wise. Maybe he would've dropped the weight that ultimately did him in?

Chris Columbus did Home Alone.

I think I'd go with Ferris Bueller and Planes, Trains...Ferris I think is seen as more of a classic but Planes, Trains and Autos was funnier.

Planes Trains was not only funnier than Ferris Bueller but also more touching. It wins on both fronts.

John Candy + Steve Martin (In Their Primes) >>>>>> Mathew Brodderick

Tough one. I went with The Breakfast Club since I can relate to it more than any of his other films. Plus it's got the great Simple Minds song.

But Ferris Bueller is great. Silly, but fun. And good God, Mia Sara was a hottie back in the day!

Planes, Tranes & Automobiles is also a classic. John Hughes' only truly adult film. And that ending with the final freeze frame on John Candy is heartbreaking.

Looking at John Hughes list from imdb.com he also wrote some excellent flicks as well including - Mr. Mom, Vacation, Great Outdoors, and Uncle Buck.

It's amazing how many of those movies I can watch over and over again whenever I see them on tv. An amazing writer/director, but what the hell happened to him? Now he writes trash like Flubber, Beethoven's 5th, Maid in Manhattan, and Home Alone 4.

PT's and A's will always have a special place in my heart. I went and saw it in the theatre only hours after the Oilers/Bills debacle and it made me feel MUCH better, if only for a couple of hours.

Breakfast Club was OK, but I've always thought it was too preachy. Sixteen Candles, on the other hand, is pure GOLD. As is Ferris Bueller.

And Weird Science? Oh, don't get me started quoting THAT movie.....

I'd like to go on record right now and say that I absolutely, without qualification, HATE Ferris Bueller's Day Off. HATE IT. With the passion of 1000 suns. I heard for years that I needed to see this movie, and when I finally did, I spent the entire run-time wanting to punch Ferris in the face.

As for the poll, I said Uncle Buck. Freaking great movie.

John Hughes = God, at least in the 80s.

I'm happy to see people still fondly remember his work. As Dobkin beautifully says in the article, his movies had a certain personal touch and authenticity that makes them relevant even to this day.

No love for She’s Having A Baby? That is one of the most underrated films on this list. It’s one of those rare flicks that could be classified as a “chick flick” but really isn’t.

I love the scene where Bacon packs the car to take his wife to the hospital – then drives off without her. :D

Also, don’t forget about all the great cameos during the closing credits when they are all trying to think of a name for the baby.
