    Anyone going tomorrow night?

If my girlfriend is worth anything she'll have my tickets waiting for me tomorrow afternoon. Otherwise I'll have to see if birthday money will be enough to get something at the last minute.

    Anyone seen them live?

I saw Van Halen open for Black Sabbath back in '77 or '78 at the Sam Houston Coliseum.

They were good, but Sabbath blew 'em off the stage does that count?

I have seen them with David Lee Roth and with Sammy Hagar.

I think they were the best with David but Sammy rocks all by himself.

I have also seen both David and Sammy solo and David was good( when he had Steve Vai playing guitar) but sammy rocks everytime he is on stage, no matter who he is with.

A buddy of mine who does business with Miller Lite got two tickets in Miller Lite's Luxury Suite at Toyota Center for tonight's VH concert, and I will be going with him. I'm not really that big of an VH fan (I do love the song "Ice Cream Man", however...LOL!), but it will be a fun night out, with free booze, food and a rock -n- roll show. Ya'll shoot me an email via this BBS if ya wanna get together tonite!

Anybody know if there is an opening act???

Sigh... my first concert ever... the 1984 tour. I saw lots of things for the first time that night... :)

...5th graders probably don't belong at Van Halen shows.

I even remember there was some opening band called "The Velcros" or something like that...

I don't think I could bring myself to see them this time around.

From my recollection, the VH 1984 tour sold out 3 shows at The Summit in Houston. I went to camp out at Almeda mall the night before tickets went on sale. They wouldn't let you line up so a friend and I parked his van in a nearby cinema parking lot. We partied it up that night. Unfortunately, we passed out and, when we woke, the lines were already forming. We went from being the only ones there to being in a long line. We had to watch as people came out screaming how they got front row. Some lucky people in the middle of the line got front row for the second show. We got upper promenade on the side :(.

At the show, I recall that a couple of...I think...women...danced atop the PA system near the back of the floor topless. There was a debate going on as to whether these were actual women or not. They looked hot but some of us thought they might be sporting a package. They had a spotlight on them. Maybe the band set that up as it seemed to planned to be an ad hoc spur of the moment kind of thing.

I don't remember much about the actual show itself. It was just VH being VH with Roth. They were Gods back then to a lot of people. Now, I don't even bother with them after their falling out with Hagar, Gary Cherone debacle, and years off.

I'm not sure who Van Halen is (not my kind of music) but are they the same band as Van Hagar? Did they change their name or something?

Van Hagar is a derisive name used for Van Halen after they booted David Lee Roth and decided to suck incredibly.

Yeah, I remember waiting in those crazy lines... for some reason I recall waiting down at the Astrodome or something.

I was actually in one of the first rows of the lower prom for that... I think some of the soundmen or security staff saw me there (with my older brother) and decided to move us away from the "show"... we ended up in the 14th row on the floor... We could still see the bras being flung around back at the PA stage. Of course I was only a 5th grader, so I was more interested in seeing David Lee Roth doing his kicks and seeing the massive drum solos... :)

That's hilarious. I was only 14 at the time myself. I think that must have been staged topless dancers by the band. I can't believe they were actually allowed to get away with that. It kind of puts the Janet Jackson spectacle to shame. Of course, this wasn't live TV but, still, the Summit was a packed house and surely there were a bunch of kids there. I can't believe they actually moved you and to better seats no less. Unreal.

I hope y'all enjoyed the show last night, but to me it was pretty boring. We left after an hour and a half, but we were mighty drunk when we took off.

Is EVH still smoking cigarettes? I saw some video footage from this year's tour and he had a cigarette on his guitar like old times. I thought surely he would have quit after his medical problems. Any sign of EVH with cigarettes last night?

None that I could see. I was also waiting for him to mention MD Anderson Cancer Center, since he spent a month there in 2002 getting part of his tongue cut out due to cancer, but he didn't mention MDACC at all.

Yeah, he pulled out a cig for his solo. I don't think it was lit, given the fact that the cig lasted during his entire 20 minute guitar-masterbation fest. I mean, I enjoyed it, but it went on FOREVER!

I don't know about you guys, but the first half of this show was pretty much a throw-away. Everything AFTER Eddie's solo was good, but up until then they were just going through the motions. It was kind of a letdown considering what they were charging for tickets.

Agreed. The whole show looked like they were going through the motions, to me anyway.

I went to see them in New Orleans at the Superdome back during the 1984 tour. I was 16 and I remember sleeping on the sidewalk waiting for the tix to go on sale. It was well worth it, because VH played for over 3 hours and played every single one of their songs I loved.

But when Diamond Dave left...it all went downhill. Granted, I liked a few of their Van Hagar songs, but for the most part, it was a horrible disappointment and a downgrade from the greatest showman in rock.
Replacing Diamond Dave in VH was like ripping out the Porsche motor in my car and replacing it with a Chevy 350. Heresy.
