Link to article Quick, who is the second-best center in the NBA? Obviously Shaquille O'Neal is the best, and the name most people put after Shaq is Yao Ming. In fact, Yao has been on fire of late, averaging 32 points and 11 boards over his last five games. But if you said Chris Kaman, you wouldn't be far off. Kaman is having a breakthrough season and is one of the reasons the Clippers have become one of the better teams in the NBA. The 7-footer from Central Michigan is averaging 11.7 points and 9.4 boards but had a huge night in L.A.'s victory over Minnesota on Monday, going for 24 points and 23 rebounds. It was another in a long line of outstanding performances for the young center. He is a traditional back-to-the-basket big man with great hands, a soft touch with either hand around the hoop and quicker feet than you'd think. He's always in good position defensively, clogging the lane and helping teammates, and he has anchored a defense that has been among the league leaders in opposing field-goal percentage all season. His presence has also opened up the game for Elton Brand, who is enjoying an MVP-type year. In short, Kaman has become a top-five center in the league and may have elevated himself to the top two or three.
sad, Yao has had a consistant 26/12 average the past 10+ game and Kerr give praise to the Predator for having ONE 20/20 game out of the 60+ game season, amazing.....
Yeah, this was funny. The "top two or three" line was a slap - clearly. If Shaq is the clear #1 as he says, then Yao should be the clear #2 in his mind. Kaman is having a good season, but better than Yao? In 3 games head to head: Kaman: 30 min, 28.6% shooting, 6.3 points, 5.7 boards Yao: 35.3 min, 61% shooting, 22.7 points, 11.3 boards Um ....
may have eh. either you think he is or you think he isn't. If I don't have confidence I can back up what I'm saying I will throw in a 'may be' or 'may have' in there. Steve Kerr 'may be' right. Or Steve Kerr 'may be' wrong. You see, he gives himself and easy way out with the 'may have'. Thats weak. I just wish he would say Kaman is the second best center in the league so I could really dog him.
On top of that, look at their regular stats. I'm too lazy to look them up, but from what Kerr just presented us with, Yao is MILES ahead in points per game, and about a rebound per game ahead. Stever Kerr's about as good at writing articles as he was at dunking.
Some people just have hard time loving Yao. It's that simple. You are not creative or intelligent if you don't say something negative about Yao. I guess that Yao is just not that lovable based on the standards in those professional journalists' community. He is too nice. He does not make noise. His moves are predictable. His numbers is not that stellar. He does everything that somebody did before. Nothing special.... But... Do those guys have any idea of a normal life of a 7'5 footer, let alone a highly competitive professional sports life. Just show some respect to a person that works harder than most people and has achieved a lot! Nothing more. Just use the same standard to judge people! Nothing more... Fainted...........
Steve Kerr is a utterly pathetic, spineless, ignorant and biased 'sportswriter/analyst' (and I use the words writer and analyst loosely). w3rd.
C'mon guys, look at the bright side - Steve Kerr is being tossed around as a possible Suns GM. His obvious talent for personnel evaluation could really help us out in that regard.
Houston gets no respect from the national media or referees. It is no LA, New York or Chicago. Hakeem was never thought highly and I am pretty sure Yao won't be thought highly throughout his career in Houston. If Hakeem has every played for the Lakers in his prime, he would be thought as the best center. But now, they hardly mention Hakeem.
Man, as if I didn't have enough reason to tune Kerr out before...... Maybe he and Rosen can run a team with thier expert eye for talent.....
I'm not really bothered by this as some of you obviously are. Why? It's STEVE FREAKIN KERR. A former NBA player that was good at one thing--hitting 3s. How would a guy with that kind of resume be considered as a(n): 1. insightful journalist that writes for Yahoo Sports--a "sports media outlet" that rivals only the likes of realgm.com? 2. great analyst on big men? The only big men he's ever played with was Duncan and Robinson. He spent the better part of his career with the likes of Luc Longley, Bill Wennington, and Jack Haley. He's just trying to be controversial. Otherwise, no one would read his column. Hell, I bet Mike Dunleavy would have a hard time putting Kaman ahead of Yao.
the only reason why kaman gets props is because people expected nothing of him. kaman is a nice player to have but you can't say he is better than miller, shaq, yao, dalambert, or camby
