I've never really met any scientists or engineers who were homosexuals - not that I'm actively seeking, of course; but it's just odd. And, no, don't make a case for homosexuals who have a Ph. D. in theater or some art course( - those make me laugh). So is there anything about being homosexual that bars people from being in science, engineering or some other technical field?
I think it's dumb that you seem to think you have to do science or engineering to be 'smart' or even technical.
Are being sciency equal to being smart? Brilliant artists and literaturists are openly homosexual. Also could some PHDs or scientists you've met closet gays?
Are you asking engineers and scientists you meet if they are homosexuals? He was the first person that came to my mind.
I know a gay guy from school that has a PhD is astrophysics. Does that count? I went to school in New Mexico and now he works for one of those labs around Albuquerque. What a fruitcake, eh?!
Most of them would be smart enough to avoid discussing their sexuality with anyone who could/would damage their professional reputation. Most of the evidence in this thread is anecdotal, but I'll just point out that I know three people, personally, who are homosexual and have PhDs.
Tom Waddell was a medical doctor. He represented the USA in the Olympic Decathlon finishing 6th in the Mexico City games. he also founded the international sporting event called the Gay Games Rachel Maddow was a Rhodes scholar and holds a Ph D in Political Science. Michael Huffington, Arianna's ex, was smart enough to become a self-made millionaire and US Congressman. Former RNP Chairman Ken Melhman was smart enought to head the Republican Party. and many more
Pretty much. A gay guy that I took Freshman through Junior engineering with graduated the year after me with a 4.0 in Chemical Engineering. He didn't come out of the closet until grad school, but that had more to do with him being from a conservative Filipino family than anything to do with school.
