I agree - he needs to be open and honest and very upfront about any mistakes he made. Otherwise, it's going to continue to follow him around. People are OK with mistakes, as long as people are willing to admit they made them.
So how in the world did W get away with pretending he never made a mistake? There is some is some wisdom in what W did do. He made vaguely admissions to problems in his youth. And from then on, he told all that asked that he said what he had to say and that was that.
While he didn't talk in detail about it, he did essentially say he messed up. This goes well beyond politics, though. Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens have steroids issues because they try to act innocent when people don't believe them. No one cares that Giambi & Pettitte did steroids - because they came out and addressed it and admitted they were wrong (regardless of sincerity). Bush, if he had admitted in 2004 or 2005 that his Iraq strategy was wrong, wouldn't be quite so hated today. It's the arrogance about it that's killed him. On the flipside, after Bill Clinton's affair, once he admitted he messed up and asked for forgiveness, his popularity rebounded. It's a general trait in Americans love/hate relationship with celebrities - we like humility and are forgiving when people ask for it. But we turn on them when they stubbornly avoid it.

Rascism is hardly confined to America. Travel basically anywhere in the world and you can see some real nasty stuff for yourself very quickly. America does seem to be the only country consumed with never-ending guilt over it though that's probably a good thing. "God Damn America" because of racism is a pretty ignorant statement however.
That's exactly right. The worst racism I've ever seen is a tie between Eastern Europe (Slovakia/Czech Republic) and South Africa. It puts everything I've ever seen in Texas or the Deep South to shame. They are open about it and flaunt it. And it comes out within 10 minutes of meeting someone. It's unreal. America by comparison is extremely tolerant.
