Had a spin out on a freeway during a snow storm here in Minnesota. Spun out across four lanes of traffic and ended up in some snow on the side of the freeway. Neither I or my car have a scratch though and was able to drive out of the snow back on to the freeway and make it home. Lucky lucky lucky...
I was probably driving a bit too fast but am a pretty good driver in bad weather and I think what might've saved me was knowing what to do. When I could feel the car start to lose control I took my foot off the break and gas and tried not to over steer. Unfortunately I had to turn a bit to keep from going into the medium and that's when it spun out. I wasn't breaking so it wasn't a fast spin out but a slow motion spin out and slide across the freeway which gave a other traffic a lot of clearance. As I could start feeling the car though get some traction I tried to give it some power to pull out of the spin but the car stalled. Luckily I was going slow enough that when I got to the snow it just stopped it rather than have me flying into a sound wall.
I've been there. It's a weird feeling. That's when experience behind the wheel takes over. Sounds like you knew what you were doing, thank goodness.
Glad you're ok. How fast were you going? I always wonder how fast I can drive when it is icy outside.
If I were you, I'd like to listen to this after the experience: Spoiler <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/JpwlUtScb6o" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Then this, just because you mentioned the title. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/lEN5uWsJ_4w" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Damn. Lucky man. People in Colorado weren't as lucky. On 1 highway IIRC, one 27 vehicle pileup, and another one with 29 vehicles.
This happened to me while I was in the car with my friend except it was during the rain. Scary stuff but luckily there were no cars behind us on the high way for that moment we were swerving all over the place.
happened to me last year on a icy road...all the traffic was behind me so i just ended up in a shallow ditch. really gets your heart racing. glad everything went well with you, be safe
Same thing happened to me on I-65 driving from Lafayette, IN back to Indy about 30 years ago. That evening there were over 1,000 accidents in the Indy metro area. What I also remember clearly was being on the side of the road, pointed in the wrong direction, watching other cars nearly lose it as they were coming right at us. I also had a passenger. During the spin, we both thought it was over. Took me a few minutes to shake it off and resume driving.
Is this you? <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/ufuJPOTB0Bg" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
