What if They Tried a Guantanamo Detainee in Manhattan and Nobody Noticed?

I don't understand why some conservatives have so little faith in the American Justice System.

 

Lot of people over at DoJ says this test case is another setback for Obama's admin since only one of 284 counts was a conviction means the use of civilian courts rather than military commissions is probably coming to an end.

This is one more example of Obama's gradual alignment of foreign policy with the Bush admin during the War on Terror. He just can't afford any more hits to his political capital, and these neoconservative policies partly assuage the 'Team America World Police' voters.

People also underestimate the influence of the intelligence community and security services within the M-I complex that support everything Guantánamo stands for, and the wealthy party donors that uphold their ideology of an America that can execute unipolar Cold War policies (extraordinary rendition, indefinite detention without charge or trial, etc.) without having the political clout or the robust economic strength of the 1945 to 1975 era. To be a neocon nation, you need lots of money and allies. With the way things are going, we won't have to worry about this as much in the next decade.

Also, the silence from so many Democrats that opposed these measures in the Bush era tells anyone they're as guilty of playing politics as the Republicans they blame for opposing Obama for the sake of opposing.

Some might say I'm fomenting division and buying into the GOP strategy of saying Obama=Bush to fragment Obama's voters, but this is beyond politics. The truth is the truth.

Anyway you are right that what is determining this is political and that few Congressional Democrats are willing to make a big issue about the use of military tribunals. From what I recall didn't Congress pass legislation preventing Obama from closing Gitmo?

I think Sam's point though stands that we are perfectly capable of trying terrorism suspects in US civilian courts.
