Those of you with children that had to dela with colic, how the hell did you do it? It just started last week and naturally, my wife and I haven't had any sleep since. Everything I read says that it typically happens in the evenings for about 3 hours. Not so for us. It typically starts around midnight and goes until 7 or 8 am.

Any remedies that might have helped you would be greatly appreciated. We've tried Gripe Water. The doctor gave him Zantac for the acid reflux. Is this just something we're going to have to live with for the forseeable future?

both, actually. We are weaning him to formula exclusively because my wife will be going back to work in a couple of weeks. He is 4 weeks as of this Friday.

I thought all first born were being given up to the baseball gods for an Astros win. Somebody get this child.

have the doctors suggested a soy based formula??? that would be my advice. a lot of times a change of formula helps. they don't digest the traditional formula as well. both of my sons needed the soy based formula....and my youngest turns one year old soon, so he'll be off formula -- which is like me getting a pay raise! :)

EDIT: Leroy, the baby's mother could use a pump for milk and store it cold for the baby to eat before she is able to come back home. They also have these pads that prevent chafing that go under the brassiere cups for sore nipples. *sorry for the graphic stuff, trying to help a fellow father here*

http://www.mediks.com/saludyvida/clubdecuna/articulo.php?id=34 (sorry, it's in Spanish) says that breast-feeding PREVENTS colics.

I also read a little bit of this:
    http://my.webmd.com/content/article/21/1728_54813.htm
    and this:
    http://www.saber.net/~bidarius/homeo/html/colic.html

When my 2 girls had those, we had a small bottle of MYLICON handy at all times. Of course, you might have to check with your doctor... only give it if you know for sure that's the problem (gas).
EDIT: This stuff works WONDERS. You can also add it to the bottle or administer it straight orally.

I'm up for trying about anything at this point. The doctor didn't say anything about suggesting a change, even after we told her what type of formula we are giving him.

Unfortunately, the Mylecon has done absolutely nothing. Actually his gas seemed to get worse when we gave that to him. Hopefully the Zantac will work. They said it might take a few days for it to really kick in. I sure hope it does.

Very true. NO two babies are alike. What's the stool looking like? You could probably determine if the formula is bad or not... was this since you tried to wean him FROM the breast?

the stool is normal for a breast fed baby. he has actually been getting both since birth due to a low birth weight. He was having trouble maintaining his body temp for the first 24 hrs, so they had us supplementing him with formula after every feeding. He's used to it and it shouldn't be the problem.

Thanks for the help, SwoLy-D & Max

Breastfeeding, Mylicon, apply counter-pressure to the stomach...i.e. lay the baby over your knee or against your shoulder. I think there may also be foods for mom to avoid.

When she does pump, she's barely getting enough for 1 feeding at a time. There just is no way to do it when she goes back to work. She works in a very small office and there is no place to hide.

Basically, I think we both know that this is going to take some time and it's only going to get worse before it gets better. Some doctor/researcher could really make millions if they could determine the cause/cure for this living hell. It hurts us to see him hurt so badly and there ain't a damn thing we can do about it. I just don't know how we're going to make it for up to 8 more weeks of this. Luckily, my parents are giving us a night off this weekend. They're going to watch him while we stay at my brothers. A night of uninterrupted sleep should do us wonders.

Why 8 weeks? Did you just pick a random number and time frame?

Don't worry, my grandparents always said that this crying will make a baby's lungs stronger, but let's hope it doesn't get worse. Here's praying for your little one. Good luck.

I can't believe I have broken a record of posting without nonsense. Here goes the breaker:

Leroy, how about changing that signature to:
"First, you get the sugar. Then you get the power. Then you get the women. Then you get the beautiful babies!" ?

It just has to run its course. Good luck. Buy some ear plugs.

I read "Any advice for a cocky infant?"

and I thought, man, if he's cocky at that age you better watch out when he grows up. Better give him the ol' b**** slap to put him in his place. just kidding. :D
