My boyfriend's toilet is a real crapper...or just, really crappy...it plugged up yesterday and we still haven't been able to fix it. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but I've always fixed toilets this way:

    • You see it's overflowing, so you turn the water off
    • You wait for the water to drain, and then you turn it back on
    • Then, with a plunger handy, you flush the toilet and immediately begin thrusting the plunger on the hole
    • The toilet is supposed to flush and voila, your problem is solved.

I've always fixed toilets this way. But whenever you try to plunge this one, the water just keeps rising instead of flushing. Consequently, you get gallons of ****ty water all over the bathroom floor (including soaking the Raiders rug I bought him for Christmas, I'm not sure how to clean that). It's really frustrating for him since it's happened a few times before, even with a courtesy flush...

I'm guessing this toilet is just broken or something...anyone a toilet expert or know what we're doing wrong? It is seriously SO annoying to have to go to the local fast food place when you need to use the restroom... :(

Stop flushing it when you plunge. Just plunge away and usually it will go down by itself when the turd has been dislodged. Also, you could go get one of those snake things (closet auger?) to break up the massive turd.

Tell your boy to flush more when he is pinching them off to keep this from happening in the future.

Call the city. If it's clogged at the main line, they may clean it out.

So I don't turn the water off at all? And when the water level is at its lowest thats when you plunge, right?

the maintenance guy from his apartment is supposed to come sometime today, but they've come before and really havent fixed anything...

I've heard adding dishwashing liquid to the bowl helps. Let it sit for a few mins, then thrown in a bucket of water really fast with all the force directed toward the trap(?) I think thats what its called. But yea, I've done that before, just without the soap, and it worked.

When the water is at a normal level, then plunge. If it is low you won't get a good seal to push that fat turd on through. You obviously don't want it to over flow either, that's why you don't flush.

I'm sorry but the problem is obvious.

You have a Raiders rug. But at least it is properly treated now.

The problem IS the water level wont go DOWN. Its been sitting an inch below the rim of the bowl for hours now. It's not draining. If I plunge it now, water will go everywhere again.

    two things:

    1) you might need the snake, for the times when a plunger just isn't good enough.

    2) sometimes you know your turds are too big. don't flush the toilet! instead, pour a good amount of clorox bleach and let it sit for a few hours. It'll make your stool nice and soft and flushable. and don't use a metric ton of toilet paper either.

i've learned my lessons from cleaning up my own poo one too many times.

You actually need to pour more water in the toilet. It has to be directly in the hole though. This creates a vortex like force and will clear out what is blocking it.

I have a feeling following the advice in this thread is just going to lead to a flood in the bathroom...

Hey, you know, everyone poops... ;)

He's at work all day, so I figured it'd be cool to learn how to fix it so he doesn't have to keep worrying about the damn thing...

Marry him. You're the best he'll ever find. Any woman willing to fix a toilet for a guy, loves that guy... (or maybe has a fecal fetish.. but that's another topic.) :D

And that is good children's book... "everyone poops." Classic stuff.

Gotta hate apartment plumbing.. there's no telling how much drug paraphernalia is being flushed by the hippie-meth-crack-fiends next door to/above/below you.

Just remember the great bathroom citizen Curtis Edward Flusher whenever you use it.

Whoa whoa whoa..who said it was him and not her? ;)

j/k.. but seriously, the 1 or 2 times I've dealt with something like that, I've plunged without flushing and it's worked perfectly..

Your plunger might be the problem. Get a good one that has the extention on the end that ensures a good seal. Not just the red cup one, but the black one that has the slinky thing on the end. Works much better, and is not near as violent during the plunging action.

How To Plunge a Clogged Toilet

We recommend a plunger with a flange for toilet (the heavy duty one oo the left in the picture), rather than the old fashioned cup style (the one on the right, which is often useless for toilet clogs and a waste of time and money).

If the bowl is full, put on some gloves and bail out water until the bowl is only half full.

If the bowl is empty, add water to fill it to half full.

In order to avoid the possibility of splash back, drape a large towel over the bowl and under the toilet seat.

Place the plunger in the bowl and completely cover the drain opening.

With the plunger completely under water, press and pull it rapidly for 15-20 seconds.

If the water drains out of the bowl, add some more water and plunge again.

If the water seems to be properly draining, go ahead and try flushing the toilet.

Indeed. Maintenance just came and I had the guy show me how to plunge it...turns out I had been plunging it correctly (thanks R2K), but the plunger wasn't properly suctioning because it's the cheapo cup kind.

Wal-Mart was out of the accordian-looking kind, but the dude said they sell 'em and they work a lot better than the $1.94 ones they have.

Thanks for all the help...I guess it's just one of the "grown up" things I have to learn how to do.
