rocketsjudoka has put together a team of architecture students from the Univ. of Minnesota who volunteered to come Spring Break and help repair homes that were damaged by Ike on the beach at Surfside, TX (south of Houston next to Freeport, TX)

I want to invite any Clutchfan who would like to hang out, work hard and have some fun on the beach to join him Wed. March 18- Fri. March 20th.

rocketsjudoka is a great Rocket fan, good poster, irish punk rocker and generally good guy who is volunteering alot of time on this.

There are several projects- An elderly lady's permanent home needs a new stair case and exterior siding, painting etc. Surfside Beach needs all of it's beach palapas rebuilt, several other projects can be added.

The city of Surfside is housing everyone in beach houses for free. (wanna get away?)

If any of you would like to volunteer some labor Wed-Fri please email him or I through the BBS and we can make arrangements.

I'm sure there might be a Rocket viewing party and other 'cool' things to do on the beach. Plus alot of people who live there still need help.

For those of you who have met rocketsjudoka he doesn't get to Houston often and he would enjoy any time he could spend with other Clutchfan members.

    Thanks

Yes, you could just come down during the day.

rocketsjudoka will be in Houston probably on Sat. The students are leaving out Sat.

If you would like to meet up and help Wed-Fri email.

    Thanks

    Rhester;

Thanks for your praise but none of this could happen without you and the students and myself appreciate the oppurtunity to come down and help. Plus the students get to escape Minnesota for a week and enjoy the Gulf.

Also lets not forget my secret agenda of converting the students to Whataburger eating Rockets fans.

As rhester noted help would be appreciated, even for a day or an afternoon. I don't know about the housing situation as that is being handled either by Rhester's church and / or the Surfside community.

On the schedule the students are starting work on Monday March 16. I have prior commitments in MN on Tues. March 17 so I won't be in Surfside until the afternoon of Wed. March 18. We have another person supervising the days I'm not there and Rhester plans on being there on Monday the 16th.

If clutchfans are interested in helping but can't come down during the week what might make sense is to come down on Sat. March 21st and work then and or that Sun.. One of the projects we are likely to do is build new beach shelters, palapas, and perhaps we could do a Clutchfans one since various college teams might end up building and branding them with their school logos. At the moment though planning is still being worked out.

Anyone who wants to help and can't make it down then though there are still many ongoing projects in Brazoria County that Rhester's church is working on and I'm sure he would appreciate the help.

I'm there for Sat. and Sun. I might have a couple of helpers in tow. I'll have to dust off my toolbelt, and you might want to keep me away from anything that has to stay up, but I'll help however I can.

Is there a specific place one could donate $ to aid in this venture. I'll actually be in Houston that weekend, but for a soccer tournament. I'd still like to help in some way...

Brazoria County Long Term Recovery Project- contact the United Way in Angleton, TX- I will post the phone number later (when I find it)

If you would like to help with specific projects we are working on please email me for information.

    Thanks that is very generous.

    Our project criteria-

    1. Help permanent residents (not rental property)
    2. Help the elderly and disadvantaged if possible
    3. Take on projects that can be brought near completion (we are not taking on the major rebuilds and roofs)

Getty ready to fly back to MN and the cold weather after spending 5 days down at beautiful Surfside beach working on hurricane repairs. It was a great experience and we were lucky to have great weather the whole time. Thanks again to Rhester and his church for organizing things from the Texas side and for all of the great food for the team. Thanks also to weslinder for coming out on Sat. and Sun. to work also.

Speaking of food while this was volunteer work there was more than ample compensation in a couple of great meals of fresh blue crab, gulf shrimp and seafood gumbo. Its been at least two years since I had that much fresh seafood.

For the rest of y'all who still want to help out there is still work to be done down in Surfside and also along the coast. I don't have the contact info on me at the moment but Rhester does otherwise I will post it in the next few days.

Before I forget thanks to the Rockets for the chance for me to watch them beat the Spurs with fellow Rockets' fans!

    GO ROX!

Rocketsjudoka- Thanks, Ms. Audrie will soon be moving back into her home (she had been displaced since Sept.) The students you brought worked hard and long.

Weslinder- thanks so much, I will email you, sorry I couldn't make it Sat and Sun.

Clutchfans and Students from U of Minn- accomplished alot to help people in Surfside Tx (right on the beach)

    1. Ms. Audrie is a 70 yr. old lady who lives alone her house was flooded by Ike and vandalized. The team rebuilt her stairs, replaced her exterior siding, screened in her porch, clean her house and painted.
    2. An elderly man (forget his name) had his stairs replaced.
    3. A quadraplegic in a wheel chair had an accessable shower built (don't know if that is totally complete.)
    4. The team also furnished drawings for a man who lost his roof.

Don't know all of the little things accomplished but it was a great spring break week.

Rocketsjudoka and I even got to pull out the guitars and jam on 'Hotel California', ZZ Top and a few others I don't remember.

Rocketsjudoka, I am going to practice and next time you are down we are going to try an organize a Clutchfans jam session. :)

    Sishir, I will email tomorrow.

Way to go rj, rhester, weslinder etc. Even though I have long since left Texas and the gulf coast, I'll always have a warm spot in my heart for Surfside. Many days I spent surfing there as a young 'un. The octagon, the pier, the jetties. Good times.

Is the Purple Cow still around? They used to make an awesome burger and fries.

It was a quite enjoyable time. The Surfside folks were really welcoming, provided for us well, and fed us really well. rocketsjudoka is quite the carpenter and kept us amateurs pointed in the right direction. The weather was great, the company was great, and we did a little good. What could be better?

You and the rest of the volunteers brought us that extra bit of luck needed to knock off the Spers in SA!

That area is so badly damaged. I'd like to see it get the same attention, money, and resources that New Orleans and the Post-Katrina Gulf Coast have been getting after too long a wait. Let's not look back and say relief took far too long in the aftermath of Ike. Sure looks like we'll be doing that.

Anyway, a great thing to do, folks.

Anyone who would like to come work a weekend please email me for contact information.

I don't think I should post the ph. numbers since they are personal cell phones but I am in contact with all the leaders who oversee the storm recovery work for Surfside Beach.

There is alot of work left.

Several houses still need extensive work - roofing, siding, interior finishes.
The Beach needs the Crabbing Pier completely rebuilt along with palapas and rest room facilities.

If I have about a weeks notice food, lodging and surfing lessons can be arranged.

    thanks, GO ROCKETS

Made it back to Minnesota safe and sound after a 4 hour delay in DFW. I don't know what it is about that airport but I have always been delayed there.

Following on Rhester's post regarding the projects the shower for the paraplegic man is still a ways from completion as it requires some expertise that most volunteers don't have, laying tile, plumbing and wiring an exhaust fan. It sounds like there is some of that expertise in the Brazoria County Recovery group.

One of the students emailed me today and said she really enjoyed the experience but is thinking about doing her Master's Thesis project around one of the Ike hit areas. Also while there I gathered some information for the group I volunteer with, Architecture for Humanity http://www.architectureforhumanity.org/, to give some design advice for rebuilding the services building down at the beach and / or an education center they want to build.

Thanks but when it comes to actually putting things together I'm as much as an amateur as you are. Most of the time I'm drawing things up and not putting saw to wood.
