Tonight's Young Republicans meeting should be particularly exciting. The meeting is at the Holiday Inn at 59 and Kirby at 7:00pm. Quanell X will be speaking -- expect some fireworks. Here is the statement Quanell X has issued regarding the event:

    June 20, 2003

I greet the Young Republicans of Texas and members of the Republican Party in the greeting words of peace, As-Salaam Alaikum.
The scriptures of the Holy Quran teach us that one learned Muslim is harder on the devil than one thousand ignorant worshippers. We, in the African-American community, must re-evaluate our relationship with the Democratic Party. History bears witness that it has been nothing more than a master-slave relationship. We must truly investigate all the platforms of the Republican Party and challenge it to address the vital needs of the African-American community. African-Americans can no longer ignore the Republican Party. We can not allow them to ignore what’s in the best interest of our community.
It is indeed an honor to accept this invitation to speak to the Young Republicans of Texas. By accepting this invitation, I will not compromise who & what I am. There are too many full-time politicians in the Republican and Democratic Parties. What the American people need is a politician who will not compromise his/her principles. Hopefully, this dialogue will serve as a medium through which this process is accomplished.
    ==============================================

A few exerpts from the HYR press release:

“HYR is an open-minded group of young people. We’re excited to have Minister Quanell X as our speaker. This continues our efforts to expand the Party,” said Rex Lamb, HYR President. “Our local county party has made great efforts to reach out to the African-American community and we are following up on that initiative.”
Minister X is well-known in the Houston community and has been very vocal in his beliefs. “It is indeed an honor to accept this invitation to speak to the Houston Young Republicans. By accepting this invitation, I will not compromise who and what I am.”
Lamb concurs. “We many not agree on every issue with Minister X, but we both believe in the importance to sit down together and have an open dialogue.”
“The Republican Party does have something to offer the African-American community. The Republican Party is the party of Abraham Lincoln. The Republican Party is the party that just elected three African-Americans to statewide office; three more than the Democrats ever had. The Republican Party is the party of George W. Bush who appointed African-Americans to highest cabinet positions in the land,” Lamb said. “The Republican Party embodies hope, freedom and opportunity. This is what we have to offer no only the African-American community, but all Americans.”

Perplexing how Rex Young neglects to mention those 140 years of Republican party history between Abraham Lincoln and George WBush. I mean, the "Southern Strategy" was practically aimed right at blacks....

Perplexing how you quoted someone who has nothing to do with either the Houston Young Republicans or Quanell X.

I think T_J was pointing out that SamFisher misspelled Rex Lamb (not Rex Young).

I think Quanell will have his hands full with this bunch tonight. I am a member of the Houston Young Republicans and there are some sharp people who will be in attendance tonight. That's pretty big of him to attend, though, I admire that. Too bad I will have to miss it - I'm stuck in Cincinnati working.

Why hasn't the young Republican given us his update???? I guess it wasn't negative enough.

Quanell X, Young Republicans see eye to eye

Minister Quannell X and a roomful of Young Republicans found out last week that they have more in common than they might have expected.

You read that right: Young Republicans.

The New Black Panther Party leader was invited for what was billed as an "open-minded dialogue" during the group's annual meeting. The crowd, mostly white males, warmed up to the bombastic leader once he said he does not hate them or other whites, supports the GOP's stance on family values, opposes affirmative action, and belongs to the National Rifle Association.

But the most spirited applause came when Quanell X described Democrats as "pimps" who often trick blacks into supporting them, only to betray them once elected.

Quanell X also had caustic comments about the Republican Party, which he called a "house divided amongst yourselves." He said many Republican leaders fail to support their colleagues during controversies, offering as an example Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, who came under intense criticism this spring over his comments against homosexuality.

"Too many Republican leaders were silent," he said. "Too many of them didn't even support the man."

Quanell X also faulted the party for not reaching out to blacks and warned that the GOP can no longer ignore black and Hispanic voters as their numbers increase. "It's incumbent upon you to begin to make inroads into our community," he said.

He also said, however, that the black community could solve its own problems rather than look to politicians, whom he describes as people who practice "poli-tricks."

One member of the Young Republicans said his opinion of the black activist had changed.

"I thought he was a militant Black Panther who was antiwhite, and I've completely changed my viewpoint on him," said Clayton Hagerman, 23.

Interesting how Quannell X also disagrees with affirmative action. His views on how the Democratic party treats minorities is accurate.

I couldn't make the speech because I went to the Rice Owl Baseball National Championship rally at Reckling Park instead.

Since the Nation of Islam and the Republican Party both make an appeal on the basis of racial solidarity it is to be expected that their views on some racial issues will be similar. Similarly their views on women and how they should be subjugated to their husbands are similar. Their views on corporal punishment and possibly sex and family structure are I suspect the same. Both groups after all are dominated by folks who are immersed in fundamentalist religions and give great deference to preachers.

You find that the Nation of Islam would rather have one African American Congressman perhaps even a Clarence Thomas type than three white liberals. They view advancement for blacks strictly from the point of view of race and a tide that rises all boats is not interesting to them. Similarly we see Tom Delay trying to cynically enlist certain blacks to back his redistricting and sacrifice numerous Democrats for another black representative or two.

There are important differences obviously with regard to such issues as starting wars in the Middle East and diverting a lot of government spending from social to military objectives.

Once the Republicans can get past their racism they will find that these fundamentalist black people do have much in common with them.

No one lumps people together better than you, glynch! Clearly all the Republicans on this board feel their wives are subordinate to them, and I know I personally just can't get past my racism. Keep up the good work! :D

I have seen that guy around since high school. It just amazes me every time I see his face taking a stance and getting the media's attention. He must have made a deal with the devil to not be in jail right now. (edit)

He was also a body guard / member of a famous local rapper's "posse." As chance would have it, when I was in college and came back to Houston I stayed at a friend's high rise appartment and he and this rapper lived in the building and there were parties all the time at one or the other's place. Man the stories I could tell.
