I have discussed this many times with other people and it was a hot topic about a year or two ago when J.Lo used it in one of her songs. Me and my girlfriend (I'm biracial and she is white) have also recently discussed it. She asked the question why do black people get to use the term and it is alright but nobody else can. I told her that many people feel that when anybody but a black person uses the word they are using it as a deragatory expression and that is why they get so upset. I, personally, do not think it is a word that should be spoken by anyone, no matter what race they are but that is why I believe some people think it is OK for black people to use the word as any other.

The word to me is foul no matter if it ends in "gga" or "gger". It is a word that was once used and still is by many people to describe the wretchedness of black people. I hate it! That is why I have created a poll for you to voice your opinion when or if you think it is right to use at all. Please participate, I would really like a lot of feedback on this subject. Thank you.

4 votes & no replies... I REALLY want to hear the reasoning behind the vote of whoever picked "everyone but whites can use it."

    That's just idiotic.

I voted that no one should ever use it.

You can't have it both ways. If you want people outside of your race to understand the vileness of the word, then you can't casually throw it around yourself.

Regardless of how you pronounce it.

I think it is important that we do not limit which words people are allowed to use. Having said that, I would not use any racial slurs because I think it is dumb. I cannot see making a huge deal out of their use, it isn't like saying the word is equal with lynching people, but I would be perfectly happy if no one said it. I do not think it is okay to apply a double standard where it is okay for one group to say it, but not okay for another group. Finally, people need to make up better slurs for whites, because whenever I hear someone called a cracker, I can't stop laughing.

    Ho man...! :(

Well in my opinion, I don't know how black people "gets to use the term". If you say it, you've said it. Whether or not there are repercussions (or concussions) from saying it is circumstantial I'd guess.

I don't say it and don't appreciate cavemen saying it around me.

Some people just have a fixation on saying crud like this either in jest or to offend. Quite a mystery, really.

What I really don't get is how "girlfriends" can call each other b!tch.

"bad black people" got votes? LOL!! What freaks voted on that one? Thats probably the worst thing I have seen in a while.

Anyways, my answer is kinda weird. I said that its okay for all to use N- gga. This really only applies to my situation. My black friends tell me that its okay for me to say that when Im referring to them. So, starting at like the age of 12 we talked to each other like that. Since Im not white, that may have something to do with it. But, at the same time, my white friends who are close to their black friends use it also. I think it mostly depends on the situation.

Every race has a word used to decribe its "bad" people. Everybody knows what these words are we have probaly been called them at some point in our life for somebody trying to inflict harm. It would be nice for there to be no racial tension across the country but it will never happen. It is wrong to use the term casually it is wrong to use it to classifly a whole group of people. There are times to use it where it is "less wrong" there are certain circumstances. Alot of people use it no differntly than they use other degatory terms to decribe the "bad" people of differnt races. I voted for it to never be used but I understand other views.

I havent voted cause I dont want to sound hypocritical. I dont think the word should be ever ok to use, even though I occasionally use it around my boys. If one of my boys says it I usually dont think twice about it. I've heard people of other races use the word like its an everyday term. Sometimes thats raises my eyebrows but I usually dont pay to much attention to it. To me it depends on who says it and how the word is used before I would be offended. For me its one of those things where its hard to define one clear answer.

Admins, can you insert the following option into the poll please?

    - Yes, it is okay for Democrat Senators, but nobody else.

    Thanks.

What I don't understand is the fixation with black people using the word around each other. I can understand if its just generally offensive and I don't use it around my friends if there are other races of around, but when I'm with just black people, I really don't care, although since I've gotten older I try not to say it at all.

But where is the poll on hispanics using the word s**c or other derogatory terms. Where is the poll on women calling each other b****. It amazes me some of the things that concern people in this forum especially when it comes to blacks.

People go out of their way to say Jesse Jackson is a racist, and black people are wrong for using the N word, and blah, blah, blah. Someone starts a thread on Jesse Jackson and the Alabama Football program and it dengenerates to the point that Jeff has to close. And people wonder why I write that some of you guys have some held back feelings that you are having a hard time keeping back.

Really, what is the big deal. Why did you even start this thread? How long has this bothered you? And I really didn't expect people to respond, but oh well, I guess race really isn't an issue in 2003.

It's simply a way that people can take ownership of something that is offensive to them and change it into something that undermines the power of the word. A lot of minority/ethnic/racial groups do the same thing.

I can talk about my mom, but nobody else can talk sh*t about here. Same principle applies here.

    Good point.

The use of the N word is irrelevant. The intent of that word's usage is what matters.

...until the "wrong person" says it. Then all hell breaks loose. So much for ownership.

I think your Mom is a cool, funny lady.

    Should I duck?

If not, why should J Lo have taken heat for her use of the N word?

Why drop the N-bomb when there are so many other phrases which communicate the same meaning? Dropping the N-bomb reflects a lack of vocabulary and a poor choice of words. There are *zero* advantages that one gains by dropping this word, with the exception of dropping it while in extremely racist company.

Because she's the "wrong person". Chaunte Moore's "Bitter" uses the word as part of the hook for that song.
