My personal campaign to get Sidney Moncrief into the Hall of Fame

I'm going to start small, by starting this thread. But expect a LOT more to come, such as me posting in this thread a lot.

If one can name a cooler person from Arkansas aside from Bill Clinton than Sidney Moncrief I'd like to hear it.

With all due respect to Sidney Moncrief, Artis Gilmore is in the front of the line for eligible players that should be in the Hall of Fame.

Oh, and Corin Nemec is the coolest person from Arkansas.

This is not the Artis Gilmore HOF thread, it is the Moncrief HOF thread - anyway there is no reason why they both should not make it.

He ALMOST made players like Randy Bruer and Paul Mokeski look like serviceable 7 foot stiffs.

Moncrief is selfish and admits himself that he's not a point guard. Why would you want Moncrief in the Hall of Fame when you've already got scorers like Wilt Chamberlain, Elvin Hayes and Larry Bird in place there? That's why Rafer Alston is the ideal fit for the Hall of Fame.

I know. Speaking of that I was doing some research for my Moncrief HOFcampaign and I came across this piece from the archives.

Humphries all Bucks need at point guard

The three qualities that should be valued most in an NBA point guard are, in order — handle, passing ability and shooting.
So why were the Bucks so intent on finding someone other than Jay Humphries to hold the keys of a team so well-equipped in virtually every other way?

Humphries personifies those qualities in every way. He cannot be considered a premier NBA point guard, but a premier guard would command more shots. That is, take shots away from bigger, more important stars and shooters on this Bucks team.

Humphries is, instead, what the Bucks need, but apparently do not always want. He keeps the ball on a string, is equally adept at going left and right, drives, splits double teams and breaks pressure.

His offensive mentality since his blacktop days, when he earned the nickname "Jay," has been pass first.

And though you could argue he has yet to become the shooter he should be, Humphries has made dramatic steps, knocking down shots, as his second-half effort (15 points) in Wednesday's season-opening loss at Utah would attest.

Besides, on a team that features Jack Sikma, Sidney Moncrief, and Terry Cummings and added nice weapons in Paul Mokeski, Randy Breuer and Larry Krystowiak, along with shooters Paul Pressey and Craig Hodges, what more would you want from the point?

Something missing

Apparently, something.

This will be the most important season of Humphries' career, if only because he's been the object of so much rumor and doubt.

The Bucks tried desperately to get Gerald Henderson in the offseason, before the former Bucks guard signed with Minnesota.

When that didn't work out, they signed Houston star Mike Dunleavy, announcing early they hoped he would become, "a rotation player" and praying he would. He hasn't.

They signed Andre Turner and sent him to the Las Vegas Summer League in hopes of his developing into a rotation role at the point. They extended the contract of Craig Hodges, a natural off guard they have tried to fit into the point role in the past.

They even released Jerry Reynolds, a proven role player, to save a roster spot for point guard John Lucas, 35, whose work toward recovery from cocaine addiction has been remarkable, but remains a long shot to return.

And, of course, come crunch time, the Bucks always have taken the ball out of Humphries' hands and run Moncrief at the point.

Over and over, the Bucks sent subtle and not-so-subtle messages to Humphries that he was their man, but likely only until a better option came along.

"They were trying to go in another direction, maybe not totally, but were looking for another one maybe to start," Humphries said. "I looked at it all summer."

With the home opener tonight, it has become clear Humphries might not be the Bucks' one and only, but he is the starting one.

Equally as clear: Despite the big additions and big stars, the key to it all for the Bucks this year is the immensely skilled, but often-doubted point guard whose status as the starter should be considered shaky.

Humphries must prove them wrong and somehow find a way to break free from entrenched perceptions and doubts about his game.

That whole "Skip to my Jay" street-ball reputation has hindered Humphries his entire career. In truth, on most NBA nights there is not a more deliberate, unspectacular player on the floor than Humphries.

He's in fact the anti-Skip To My Jay in demeanor and approach. Yet among the shortcomings often rattled off about his game — and he hears them all — are that he has yet to rein in the street ball. Nothing could be further from the truth.

The more legitimate doubt might be Humphries' abilities as an outside scorer, but he has made strides and scored all his 15 points in the second half in Wednesday's loss, helping spark the ill-fated Rockets comeback.

The Bucks keep looking. Fans keep wondering: When's Lucas going to be ready? Why doesn't Turner get some time? If only the Bucks had a better point guard.

"People want shooters," Humphries said. "People love the scoring point guards. That's the way of the league. You have your Thomas, you have Magic Johnson, Kevin Johnson. People aren't into the true, natural point guards.

"That's my game. I've got so many weapons. I know how to get them the ball. But the general public might not like that."

Here's Humphries, who finished 10th in the NBA in assists and eighth in turnover ratio among point guards who averaged more than 34 minutes per game last season. He's still holding the keys. Still often doubted.

"I've been among the leaders," Humphries said. "Tenth in assists? And they still were trying to find someone else. If you're going to find another one, he'd better be in the first nine."

If the Bucks are going to reach a higher level this season, it's not just fans and critics Humphries must convince. It's his bosses.

A homage to a Bucks legend! Right on! They don't know about the heroes Fisher, they only care about players who think they are too good for the NBA and its rules. The Old School, they don't know.

Elie: “My prototype players were Moncrief and Magic because they did everything -- they rebounded, they assisted, they guarded, they scored. That was the type of player that I liked, even though I think that Michael Jordan is a great talent. Those two guys excelled in all facets of the game and they were who I really wanted to pattern my game after. Q: “People don’t know about Moncrief anymore because he had the injuries, didn’t win a championship and played in a small market. All those things conspire against him in terms of being well known to people today but he was a great, great player.”

Elie: “Yeah. I was a big NBA fan and I really enjoyed watching Sidney Moncrief and also Paul Pressey, a guy who could guard bigger guys and handle the ball at 6-6, 6-7, making great decisions. Moncrief was just hard. I was a big defensive guy and Moncrief would play both ends of the court. I really wanted to be a complete player.”
