I hate trade threads but I'm starting one. The Knicks have a frontcourt logjam with Frye, Lee, Balkman, Jeffries all deserving some minutes and able to play PF The most obviously desirable quantity is David Lee. But let me make this abundantly clear, sports fans: There is almost no way the Rockets can get him without trading Yao. I don't even think a package including McGrady would do it at this point given his back issues and large salary. I'm not saying that David Lee is worth Yao, I'm saying the Rockets don't have enough value to get a young, cheap, good player like that. He's a very desirable commodity and is almost untouchable from the knicks perspective. So just forget about it, it's not happening. NOT. HAPPENING. Balkman I also like but he's too young and the Knicks would probably want to hold on to him for the rest of the year at least. Jeffries just came back from injury and appears to be (through 2 games) the Knicks version of Shane Battier - efficient scorer/defensive captain/hustler - in short the "glue" type +/- stat w****. He's not going anywhere. Odd man out is Frye, who, after a very strong rookie campaign last year - has had an absolutely HORRIFIC start to the season this year. As he finally started to get untracked last month, he got injured to compound his woes. Even worse, David Lee has emerged as a force and Jeffries will also eat into his minutes along with Balkman (think Jerome Williams). Further, Curry's recent hot streak means that there's going to be less time for Frye at C. Logic indicates, Frye is the odd man out, and still worth taking a chance on from the Rox perspective, even if we don't want to start him. He can take Juwan's place (Juwan's mid range J is out of place on the rox, but Frye's got one if you can't live without it) AND he can take Dikembe's place. To boot he's an ok rebounder and defender (at least he was last year). He can essentially be the long sought 3rd big man in the frontcourt rotation behind the incredible foul machine Chuck Hayes and Yao. How do we get him? Well the Knicks don't really need players, they need LESS players to clear up the logjam. Accordingly an expiring contract (such as Dikembe's, which expires this year and matches perfectly) does the trick. The cap room is of little inherent value to the knicks since they don't care that much about money, so package that along with a future first round pick (which the knicks will lack next year due to the Bulls deal) and it seems to be a decent deal for both teams. Only problem is that Isiah becomes sort of attached to the guys he brings in and doesn't want to give them up (which is why he continued to start Frye). He might need to be removed from the equation for it to ever happen. (insert "isiah is so dumb that _____"joke in your mind, not in html, plz)
I am pretty sure Isiah would trade us Frye if we take back Francis or Marbury. Howard Rafer Padgett for Frye Francis haha
Doesn't work under the cap. There's virtually no scenario in which the Rockets would be able to obtain Francis or Marbury without giving up 5-6 different players. Another possibility is trading Sura's contract, though we'd have to take back some trash like Cato to make the deal work.
No way in hell we're getting Channing Frye. I don't usually say that because there's always a chance in the Nba, but he has star potential for this team. Francis on the otherhand...obtainable.
The problem is...so does David Lee, Jeffries and Balkman are more than capable backups, and Frye's star has dimmed a bit. Not for the Rockets he isn't - we don't have the salaries to match outside of Yao or McGrady - and I doubt any team would commit to McGrady at this point with his back issues in any event (not that he's not better than Francis).
To get Frye or Balkman we would have to take on a bad contract like Francis. The question is whether Steve has matured as a playmaker because his athleticism is eroding and he is very expensive. Granted, he can get his own shot unlike our current crop of starters (T-Mc excepted). IMO, he is no longer worth the money, so I'd have to pass on that scenario. Good thought though, Sam. Obtaining the fragile Frye would almost be as good as acquiring LaMarcus Aldridge -- well a really stretched almost.
it's not a bad idea. i mean to say that it's a great trade for the rockets. i'd rather use the TE than give up deke. the only problem is that the knicks (isaiah) are very stubborn when it comes to thier favorite players. frye was a lotto pick one year ago. he was one of the best rookies last year. i doubt they give him away for an ending contract (or a TE) and a late first round pick. not yet at least. maybe if he is out of the rotation/dissapointing next season. however, would you still want him in that situation?
i posted this earlier in another thread. http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showpost.php?p=2644782&postcount=206 "Jared Jeffries finally played a game for the Knicks and showed why the Rockets had considered him with their MLE in the off-season. It'll will be interesting as they're stacked with bigs, ie if they'll package one of their young prospects in order to dump Francis's contract? JHo+Bonzi+Sura+Lucas for Francis+Lee (Knicks will potentially get 3 expiring and Juwan's more manageable contract) Rafer, Francis, Vspan TMac, Head, (Azubuike) Battier, Snyder, Novak Hayes, Lee, Padgett Yao, Deke, (Haryasz)" If taking on Francis's contract is what is needed to make it work. Then Lee is the only viable option if Rockets are to stay under the luxury tax threshold. Even then I'm not too sure. Though Frye or Balkman would definately have the Rocks paying luxury tax.
Value doesn't match. Channing Frye is worth more than mythical cap space (mythical because the Knicks would remain woefully over the cap) and a ~25th draft pick. I'm not saying that the Knicks wouldn't move Channing Frye, but they would expect something in return.
The simple question is whether Isaih is empowered AT THIS TIME to make any trade? Or, corrollarily, any trade other than Stevie Contract. Poor Isaih with his testicles tied.
I disagree about having to take on a really bad contract like Francis or Marbury. It's simply not workable for almost any possible trading partner to trade for those two(especially the Rockets) insofar as their contracts are just too big, without giving up another Max contract in exchange - which really gets the knicks nowhere unless somebody is giving them Steve nash (not going to happen) I think the Knicks have realized they're stuck with those contracts. To get Francis/Marbury and Frye, we'd have to literally trade 6-7 players for them - you can't have a 22 man roster so that's not goign to work either. The Knicks aren't looking for cap or luxury tax relief as they still make a ton of money - and they never really have, and they're not going to get it. What they need is a way to defer salary into the future and to settle on a rotation. somebody has got to leave their frontcourt at some point either this year or in the offseason, which is why they've got to realize some value so a draft pick makes sense. If the Knicks were to try to dump a trash contract on us with Frye, I think a more workable option would be to try to include middle class albatrosses like Malik Rose or Jerome James - in which case the Rox could probably work up a package involving Dikembe & Sura's expiring contracts and a future first.
The problem for the Knicks is that they have logjams all over their rotation - what do you buy the kid that has everything? PG? Francis, Marbury, Robinson, & rookie Mardy Collins. SG? Richardson, Francs/Marbury, Crawford SF? Richardson, Jeffries, Balkman PF? Lee, Frye, Balkman, Jeffries C? Curry, Cato, James, Frye That's why I think they need to do some addition by subtraction. That's why the draft pick is the the only thing that makes sense. They're going to have to trade one of Frye/Jeffries/Balkman/Lee eventually or lose them for squat because I don't see those guys wanting to stay around and play reduced minutes
I llike it!!!! Even giving up Mutombo, who is already past retirement and Sura who is unable to play. Francis is my coice over Marbury because by now Francis Must have learned some common sence and maturity, through the school of hard knocks and be willing to play the team game. I wouldnt mind Cato returning as well. I feel sure Francis would do anything to be back with his old team, even pass to Yao Ming! Sura,Mutombo,Alston, Howard and Padgett To the Knicks Francis Frye and Cato to the Rockets......Would this work ??
Isaiah Thomas proved that he could care less about expiring contracts the day he bought out Jalen Rose.
I'd love to have Francis back. Frye was who I wanted out of that draft. That would be fantastic for this team, at a cost of not so much. Sadly, the Rockets don't run their franchise to please me personally. And hey, don't b**** and whine about Francis' contract; (a) we gave it to him and were justified in doing so and (b) it ain't your money. I'd do a deal excluding the Big Three any day of the week and twice on the Lord's day.
Article: The Frye is falling Regarding Francis - again, guys, it's not happening, there's almost no way to get it to work under the cap unless you're giving up Yao and/or Tracy - which won't happen.
Not a bad thought, it just depends upon what we would have to give up or who we would have to take on to get him. It's been mentioned already, but I don't see how a talented but flawed piece like Frye gets moved without whatever team having to take on a Francis, Marbury, Jerome James, etc. In regards to your idea involving Deke. I know the NBA is a business, but I really doubt the organization has the stones to move a player like Deke who basically proclaimed to the world that he wants to retire a Rocket. Call me crazy, but I just have a hard time seeing it happen.
OK, just reading the Post, Isiah, in a WTF? moment, is benching Lee and starting Jeffries in an effort to create some sort of "super-sub" 3-man unit in Lee, Frye, and Balkman. http://www.nypost.com/seven/12142006/sports/knicks/bench_duty_awaits_frye_knicks_marc_berman.htm Jeffries can play the SF spot, or at least he used to - so essentially what Thomas is doing is benching Lee for Jamal Crawford.
