The East isn't as deep. The West has 10 legitimate teams, and the East only has 7. But, the East has more power at the top. WC 3rd seed Memphis, is a half-game better than EC 6th seed Atlanta. So, it depends on how you want to measure it. In any case, though, it isn't near as bad an inequity as we used to see.

    East
    2 elite teams
    5 good teams
    3 mediocre teams
    3 bad teams
    2 horrible teams

    West
    1 elite team
    8 good teams
    4 mediocre teams
    1 bad team
    1 horrible team

The East has two elite teams vs West's one. Other than that, the West is much better. The East has FIVE bad to horrible teams. The West only has two.

If you think about how this affects the "good" records of the better Eastern teams because of the much more frequent bad opponents, you see the picture.

    lets see last year playoffs:

    Eastern Conference:
Indiana got 37 wins, and was in the playoffs
    the 7th seed had a 41-41 record
    the 6th seed had a 42-40 record

    western conference:
11th seed got 39 wins (enough wins to make the playoffs in the east)
the 8th seed got 46 wins, that means the 8th seed would be the the 5th seed in the east.

one time if you didnt have more than 50 wins in the west you didnt make the playoffs.
only 3 or 4 teams gets over 50 wins in the east.

so is very obvious which conference is better.
