Something I've been meaning to do for games this year (ideally all of them, but hopefully at least most of them) is chart detailed defensive information for every player. As you know, defense is very difficult to quantify in basketball, but there's a lot more that can be done then simply looking at defensive rebounds, steals, and blocks. The difficulty is apportioning credit for for various events like field goals attempts and scored, free throws, offensive rebounds, and forced turnovers. Often, there are mulitple players involved. What I did for game 1 is assign credit for various such events as I saw fit, trying to be as consistent as possible. The result shows which players were most active on the defensive end, and most effective in getting stops. I tracked many different things, and tried to keep it as consistent as possible with the boxscore (though I notice that I missed a few offensive rebounds this time around). I'll post my results for the first game below. My observations: McGrady didn't too much as far as defending shots. It seems like the Jazz were making a concerted effort to play through Okur and Boozer instead of Kirilenko, so McGrady was often just hanging out. And his DTS% wasn't very good on the shots he was responsible for (including a transition layup where he didn't bother crossing half court). He did force numerous turnovers though (drew a charge, 3 steals, etc.) Alston got his hand on the ball numerous times, though he didn't force turnovers on most of them. Battier played well defensively. He was very active on help defense, which is why his DFGA and DFTA is so high. He forced more missed field goals than anyone else, which is impressive for a wing player. On a night when the Jazz were seemingly scoring at will, their efficiency was below average on the scoring attempts he defended (as indicated by DTS%) Yao had a tough time guarding Boozer early on, and he has a difficultly defending outside of 10 feet from the basket. He was called twice for defensive 3-second violation as well. Snyder was very active, but he got burned several times on catch and shoot jumpers by C.J. Miles. It seems this had more to do with the Rockets team defensive philosophy than Snyder's man defense, however. It almost seemed like the Jazz were consciously attacking Padgett when he was in the game (10 DFGA in only 20 minutes!). He worked hard, and generally without the help of double teams. Luther Head was pretty bad this game, I thought. He couldn't stay in front of Deron Williams, and he was outmuscled by Ronnie Brewer. Ditto Steve Novak. He didn't do anything right defensively. In particular, he gave up two offensive rebounds to the Jazz ... just outworked. Mutombo was very active and fairly effective while in the game (8.5 DFGA in only 10 minutes, and DTS% only 48%). But he doesn't have nearly the same quickness and agility he had two years ago. Chuck Hayes in limited minutes did a decent job. He forced one miss in a one on one situation, forced a turnover in another one on one situation, but was involved (as a helper) in two plays in which they scored field goals.

one thing I liked a lot was seeing Wells guarding Stack. Even though Stack still scored a couple times on Bozi, but consider this was Bozi first game and he held his groud, I was very happy. Bozi is a big upgrade over Wesley not only on the offensive end but also on the defensive end. He's going to make our defense solid.

Hayes had a great start to the game. In the first seven minutes, he forced 4 turnovers and 2 missed field goals. He was less effective defensively after that, by my measurements. He yielded 3.5 out of 4.5 field goals, 2 made free throws, and didn't force any more turnovers. He did appear to be much more effective limiting Nowitzki then any of our other players. Biggest problem, of course, was he fouled like crazy. He needs to learn to limit the fouls while also staying aggressive. With more experience, I think he'll eventually do that. He's still very inexperienced.
Chuckie definitely showed he *can be* a option to limit Dirk Its damn near impossible to stop him, but Chuck did a good job of staying in his face. I also thoguht Battier had excellent positioning on Dirk in the post...also...didnt shut him down, but he certainly made him work for his points.
well utah have been rolling these past few games, boozer is playing real, real well - a big relief, really, to know it wasn't just us who couldn't contain him... then again, worrying that we seem to have yet another tough western conference rival... let's hope our massive win over dallas wasn't an aberration either, it was such a satisfying win (imagine if TMac had a big game...), i really want us to start the season on a roll.
The team played good defence tonight. And as surprising as it is, it started from Alston. That's the best news, not the margin of the victory. If you play well on defence, results will come.
I think it was Hayes' 4th or 5th foul - he had position and Dirk justed turned into him with a should - Hayes kept his hands straight up and the refs still called him - Dirk got the star call. The one call that really stunk was when Josh Howard? blocked Tmac, and he tried to dribble down the right side, the Mav moved over into Tmac's path along the OOB line, had no prior right to the position, was still moving and did not have his feet down AT ALL - AND Tmac was called for OF!!! POC! But we won by 31!
It was his 5th.. Chuck's 4th was a hand check foul (I remember that one distinctly! LOL I just finished watching the highlights video and there was a lot of hustle on the defensive end leading to fast break points. Which is good to see, because last year when the Rox made the steal it seemed like they slowed the ball at half court and waited. Hopefully this high steal - low turnover ration continues!
We lost to the Jazz, but McGrady and just about every other Rocket sucked that night. And we didn't have Wells.
