I was perusing the Rockets contract situation and noticed a significant amount of dead wood or wasted money for this upcomming season.

    We are paying :

    Justin Reed 1.573 million
    Jackie Butler 2.552 million

That is $4+ million against the cap that is wasted money.

And if you add in :

    Steve Francis 2.634 Million
    Loren Woods 1 million

you are now nearly $ 8 million in Deadwood salaries.

Dang, I know Morey reshaped the roster last season, but we sure could use an Axe for this year's monies too...

You have to admire Les for taking on the deadwood to give the team a better chance of success....Scola for example......but dang it would be nice to be able to package those contracts of players cut with BJax and Francis to get a real good player like Maggette...

Oh well.....at least next year looks good.....no Deadwood on the roster then....well outside of Luther...

    ;)

It's not quite so bad in my opinion...

Jackie Butler's money came with Scola, so I would just pretend that it's added to Scola's salary. Puts him at about 5.5 mil, right? That seems fair to me for what he brought.

Francis and Woods are expiring, so they are at least somewhat useful.

Justin Reed's 1.6 is definitely wasted.

I guess I missed the point. BTW - Woods, like Harris, is not guaranteed. BJax + Stevie = a great Feb trade.

My single biggest short term concern is Landry eating into the MLE as Pietrus/Gomes/Posey/are just three names of guys I'd love to be able to offer a chance to come to The Toy Shop.

Morey commented that Reed was a player the Rockets were targeting, and not just a filler in the trade.

Of course, this was before we pulled off the Scola deal. So at the time of the James/JHo swap, Reed was insurance considering Hayes was the only other PF on the roster at the time.

Unfortunately that contingency plan turned into deadwood. And I guess that puts Scola's value at 7.1M to the Rockets. An interesting perspective.

Yes, true, it is just if you were somehow able to trade the contracts of Butler and Reed, you could have a lot more in expirings to get a better player.

I actually thought the same Baytown Bandit. You remember the t'wolves held on to Terrel Brandon forever knowing he wasn't playing again and traded him at the deadline. The Mavs pulled Van Horn out and used him to get a plyer. I thought the rox could have done the same with sura. Butler could have been on the roster if nothing else as another big body, then they wouldn't need woods. I don't know, maybe Morey is still learning since he was never really a basketball guy in general.

I've been looking at depth charts and salaries of other teams as well as loading up the 300 gig of games throughout the yr looking at players. There are some bargains out there for depth and guys that can help thi team. Like u said, those contracts could really be useful. I guess none of those guys could have went d-league.

    Leeb,

The funny thing is that the Rockets have not done much with their expiring contracts or trade exceptions.

Every year we hear how valuable they are, only to watch the contracts run out and the trade exceptions expire.

Now with Morey talking on 610 recently about how valuable our expirings are and to not expect something until February.....it just rings a bit hallow to me.

Everybody is a wait and see. Francis is cheap and an unknown quanitity. Loren Woods is cheap and might turn into something. BJax is valuable still. Cheap shot at Francis by the way. How bout we cut Novak?

It also reeks of poor planning which like I said I'm trying to give the guy a break. If reed was a target guy, scola was traded for and landry drafted, why was hayes retained? If Alston is on the roster, traded for James, signed francis and drafted brooks, why was head on the roster? That's wha I'm saying. Once a move was made or a series of moves, it should have sparked another. It kinda wasted roster space and caused them to cut a valuable asset, expiring contract.

Every NBA team has these contracts. Rockets haven't done anything out of the ordinary.

    1. Pray tell, who would you have cut before opening day instead of Butler? It was basically keep Landry or Butler. The other option would have been Snyder, but then you're cutting an immediately expiring contract for one a year down the line.

    2. Players that are still part of the team but playing in the D-League still count against the roster limit.

DD -- We had 17 guaranteed contracts going into the year. Butler was the cost of doing business to get Scola, and Reed was the cost for Mike James. In hindsight, we probably skip out on the Francis signing, look elsewhere instead of MIke James, and cut Snyder instead of Butler. The net-net of that is less dead money, and an expiring Butler instead of a trade exception created by Snyder.

Those would be expiring contracts were cut because we had no other options. You can blame that on Morey if you want, but considering it was his first full offseason on the job, I thought he did a fine job cutting out the fat. Our salary structure after this year looks a lot cleaner.

I know, that's why i'll believe when I see it. I think Morey is a fraud, that's just my opinion. I think les is shortcutting this teams ability to win it. I remember the 7.8m te we had and just let it eveaporate. We have had these expirings before and just let them go. I'm sure Sura's contact with another player could have been used to get a player trying to dump players. We know 5m bench players get traded all the time, but those guys can get you over the hump.

I guess my frustration comes from the lack of creating winning scenerios for the squad. Even without Yao, the rox were a Ricky Davis kinda of player away from even beating that team. People will jump up and say Ricky Davis this and Ricky Davis that, but Miami was going nowhere, he was was a expiring contract and they were in full tank mode. If u take Sura's contract plus a cheap one like Head who is expendable, now u have Ricky Davis backing up Tracy and Shane. Now you have a veteran former 20ppg swingman to come in and backup and take some creation and scoring off Tracy. That's why I don't trust morey. I don't think its all about winning with him.

We're just having conversation so lets just analyze this. U target reed, u trade for scola, and u draft landry. Hayes should have been a goner. Rafer is on the roster, u trade for James, sign francis, and draft brooks, head should have been a goner. Trade for jackson and trade for green, head should have been a goner. U can't overload a roster at 1 spot and be really thin at others. That's all I'm saying.

You mean like the Warriors? Actually when we traded for Green and then waived him doesn't that mean we are also paying Green too just like Jackie Butler?

TIS TWOO, tis so twoo...but, the pair were released (unlike KVH, for example).

I am concerned that DM the GM is planning to enter next season with this roster virtually intact then hope to pounce on the 'next Gasol', a not at all certain outcome. After all, when was there last such an apparently lopsided swap? (OK, insert joke here...)

So you would have traded Head and Hayes. Who for? Would the guys you get in get paid a salary and take up a roster spot, too, which would force you to cut Reed and Butler anyway or are you suggesting we (1) trade them for someone who suck more than Butler and Reed so we can cut that guy, (2)we simply give up re-signing Hayes or (3) trade one of them for no salary? What scenario are you specifically thinking about?

What's the benefit of these alternatives? What can the Rockets do under your scenario that they can't do now?

The Rockets have Bobby Jackson's expriing contract and Steve Francis' expiring contract. The sum of these two plus the salary of another player you presumably have to add to the package if we are trying to get back anything significant, should allow the Rockets to get back virtually the salary of anyone who is reasonably available on the market. I doubt there is a player out there the Rockets will not be able to get solely because of lack of Reed or Butler.

Wow, I mean, wow. I am glad you aren't the GM.

Basically you just dropped two of the players, Chuck and Luther, that your coach trusted enough to started at times during the season for two unknown performers, in Reed and Butler.

This after you just re-signed Chuck for a four year contract and took the 4th season option on in Luther.

I think you are letting your bias against certain players color your business decisions.
