Not much has really been shown from the game during its development, but with its release date coming up soon, Atari has started to hype the game with several new videos in the last month or so (just put out the most recent trailer a couple of days ago IIRC). Here are some of the videos I'm talking about (2nd and 3rd videos are real-time tech demos, the other two are trailers): <object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=8,0,0,0" id="gtembed" width="480" height="392"> <param name="allowScriptAccess" value="sameDomain" /> <param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> <param name="movie" value="http://www.gametrailers.com/remote_wrap.php?mid=29843"/> <param name="quality" value="high" /> <embed src="http://www.gametrailers.com/remote_wrap.php?mid=29843" swLiveConnect="true" name="gtembed" align="middle" allowScriptAccess="sameDomain" allowFullScreen="true" quality="high" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="480" height="392"></embed> </object> <object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=8,0,0,0" id="gtembed" width="480" height="392"> <param name="allowScriptAccess" value="sameDomain" /> <param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> <param name="movie" value="http://www.gametrailers.com/remote_wrap.php?mid=30714"/> <param name="quality" value="high" /> <embed src="http://www.gametrailers.com/remote_wrap.php?mid=30714" swLiveConnect="true" name="gtembed" align="middle" allowScriptAccess="sameDomain" allowFullScreen="true" quality="high" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="480" height="392"></embed> </object> <object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=8,0,0,0" id="gtembed" width="480" height="392"> <param name="allowScriptAccess" value="sameDomain" /> <param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> <param name="movie" value="http://www.gametrailers.com/remote_wrap.php?mid=31205"/> <param name="quality" value="high" /> <embed src="http://www.gametrailers.com/remote_wrap.php?mid=31205" swLiveConnect="true" name="gtembed" align="middle" allowScriptAccess="sameDomain" allowFullScreen="true" quality="high" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="480" height="392"></embed> </object> <object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=8,0,0,0" id="gtembed" width="480" height="392"> <param name="allowScriptAccess" value="sameDomain" /> <param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> <param name="movie" value="http://www.gametrailers.com/remote_wrap.php?mid=31902"/> <param name="quality" value="high" /> <embed src="http://www.gametrailers.com/remote_wrap.php?mid=31902" swLiveConnect="true" name="gtembed" align="middle" allowScriptAccess="sameDomain" allowFullScreen="true" quality="high" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="480" height="392"></embed> </object> Of course, check them out in higher resolution if possible. I know my interest in the game shot up quite a bit after watching these videos. Impressive technology + unique gameplay mechanics + nice soundtrack + interesting material = ___? Guess we'll have to find out later, but it certainly seems to have some nice potential. It has a few rough spots for sure, but it seems easy to overlook those given some of the positives (especially since there's still some time to work those out). According to Wikipedia, the game will be released on pretty much every major platform (PC, 360, PS3, PS2, Wii). I think the PS2 and Wii versions are being developed by someone else though. I believe the game is currently scheduled to release on June 2, although the PS3 release has been pushed back due to development issues AFAIK. Here's a link to the Wikipedia page for more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alone_in_the_dark_5
Holy crap. Thanks for posting these. It almost seems a little like RE4 combined with some Bioshock-type mechanics. I like. Wasn't the least bit interested before, but I am now.
Hey, speaking of creepy games... anyone here played Condemned 2? I'm vaguely wondering if I should pick it up.
That's basically how I felt...pretty sure these latest videos are attracting the attention of a lot of gamers though. I thought this game was going to be vaporware given how little we've seen and how long ago it should have been released (release date kept getting pushed further and further back IIRC). Again, I'm not trying to get too high on the game, but it definitely exceeded any expectations I had for it. I always wanted to give the 1st game a shot, but I never got around to it. I'd definitely appreciate any feedback as well. Seems like an overlooked IP. All this talk just reminds me about how bad Silent Hill 5 looks. Maybe they should scrap the project and get Eden Studios (AITD developer) to work on SH5 when they're done with AITD5. At least it wouldn't look worse than a PS2 game anymore.
Which Silent Hill was your favorite? I've only ever played the original, and while I remember it was scary, I just didn't enjoy it as much as the Resident Evil games (I somehow missed RE2 though, which I hear was the best one). My prevailing memory of Silent Hill was how ludicrously wide the streets were. I should probably try one of the newer ones. Oh, and if you want a pretty good game just for sheer creepiness factor, I enjoyed Clock Tower 3. The gameplay is meh, but the fact that you're a little schoolgirl without any real weapons for most of the game makes it scary in a way RE could never be. The cutscenes and baddies are fantastic.
Silent Hill 2 by far. I don't want to spoil anything, but it definitely has some deep psychological factors that I really enjoyed (at least compared to most other video games). I'd probably rank Silent Hill 3 above the original Silent Hill, although I've seen SH fans debate over that one (I could see it either way, they're pretty close in quality IMO...that and they're directly related, so I have trouble separating them). I technically didn't play through SH3 though. I played parts of it years ago at a friend's house, and then I tried to buy it a year or so ago. A bit hard to find and expensive ($35 used IIRC) when I tried looking for it, so I ended up just downloading a video walkthrough of the game online which was pretty nice for what I wanted (not like I wanted to experience clunky controls, crappy camera, a lot of backtracking, etc.). I avoided playing SH4 due to what I heard about the game, but I recently checked out the cutscenes for that game as well, and it seemed pretty good as well (although I definitely can see how the game started as a non-SH game...probably should have stayed that way). I think the complaints on that game were gameplay-related, so it would make sense that I came away enjoying it since I didn't actually have to play it like others did. Haven't checked out SH Origins yet. I've heard mixed things about it, although I think it came out better than people expected from what I understand. I've been trying to get back into the RE games. I played them years ago (1-3 IIRC), although I can't remember much about them (outside of shooting evil zombie monsters and bad voice acting). I need Capcom to put out a collection right before RE5. That would be great.
Gametrailers has several new gameplay clips for the game: <object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=8,0,0,0" id="gtembed" width="480" height="392"> <param name="allowScriptAccess" value="sameDomain" /> <param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> <param name="movie" value="http://www.gametrailers.com/remote_wrap.php?mid=32991"/> <param name="quality" value="high" /> <embed src="http://www.gametrailers.com/remote_wrap.php?mid=32991" swLiveConnect="true" name="gtembed" align="middle" allowScriptAccess="sameDomain" allowFullScreen="true" quality="high" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="480" height="392"></embed> </object> (technically a tech demo, but I threw it in there with the rest) <object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=8,0,0,0" id="gtembed" width="480" height="392"> <param name="allowScriptAccess" value="sameDomain" /> <param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> <param name="movie" value="http://www.gametrailers.com/remote_wrap.php?mid=33053"/> <param name="quality" value="high" /> <embed src="http://www.gametrailers.com/remote_wrap.php?mid=33053" swLiveConnect="true" name="gtembed" align="middle" allowScriptAccess="sameDomain" allowFullScreen="true" quality="high" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="480" height="392"></embed> </object> <object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=8,0,0,0" id="gtembed" width="480" height="392"> <param name="allowScriptAccess" value="sameDomain" /> <param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> <param name="movie" value="http://www.gametrailers.com/remote_wrap.php?mid=33047"/> <param name="quality" value="high" /> <embed src="http://www.gametrailers.com/remote_wrap.php?mid=33047" swLiveConnect="true" name="gtembed" align="middle" allowScriptAccess="sameDomain" allowFullScreen="true" quality="high" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="480" height="392"></embed> </object> <object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=8,0,0,0" id="gtembed" width="480" height="392"> <param name="allowScriptAccess" value="sameDomain" /> <param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> <param name="movie" value="http://www.gametrailers.com/remote_wrap.php?mid=33045"/> <param name="quality" value="high" /> <embed src="http://www.gametrailers.com/remote_wrap.php?mid=33045" swLiveConnect="true" name="gtembed" align="middle" allowScriptAccess="sameDomain" allowFullScreen="true" quality="high" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="480" height="392"></embed> </object> <object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=8,0,0,0" id="gtembed" width="480" height="392"> <param name="allowScriptAccess" value="sameDomain" /> <param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> <param name="movie" value="http://www.gametrailers.com/remote_wrap.php?mid=33043"/> <param name="quality" value="high" /> <embed src="http://www.gametrailers.com/remote_wrap.php?mid=33043" swLiveConnect="true" name="gtembed" align="middle" allowScriptAccess="sameDomain" allowFullScreen="true" quality="high" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="480" height="392"></embed> </object> <object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=8,0,0,0" id="gtembed" width="480" height="392"> <param name="allowScriptAccess" value="sameDomain" /> <param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> <param name="movie" value="http://www.gametrailers.com/remote_wrap.php?mid=33040"/> <param name="quality" value="high" /> <embed src="http://www.gametrailers.com/remote_wrap.php?mid=33040" swLiveConnect="true" name="gtembed" align="middle" allowScriptAccess="sameDomain" allowFullScreen="true" quality="high" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="480" height="392"></embed> </object> Unfortunately, these videos seem to indicate that this game may actually have a few flaws. Some of the stuff makes the game look as awesome as always (the driving section of the Descent clip looks crazy), but it seems like the combat could use a lot of work. I suppose if it is like SH (combat not really that important), they could probably get by with poor combat gameplay (clunkiness, poor AI, etc.). That doesn't seem to be the direction the game is going though, so it is probably important that they fine-tune that aspect of the game by quite a bit.
Turns out it pretty much blows. 60 on metacritic. http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/xbox360/aloneinthedark
I think I jinxed them. Shortly after I make this thread, they start showing off more of the gameplay that is probably more representative of the game, and it looks really rough. I haven't played the final version, but I'm assuming some/all of the problems found in the videos I was talking about in my last post were in the final version, along with others. I was hoping that things would be fixed before released, but there was only so much time left. They probably should have delayed it another 6-9 months at the very least. I'm guessing it still has its good moments, so some fine-tuning probably could have helped out a lot.
Yeah, the last time I had looked at it was when you posted this thread, and then when I got on my 360 last night to play some NBA 2k8, I noticed that my friend was playing Alone In The Dark. I messaged him to see what he thought of it, and expected to get a positive response. He replied with "It doesn't seem finished. Guess that's why the PS3 release is being held back." I was surprised, so I looked up the score on IGN and was blown away. They gave it a 3.5
It actually makes me wonder how bad the PS3 version had to be if they thought they needed some more time to get it on par with the other versions.
