chinese basketball officials already denied that. and i don't think china needs lin that badly. they had yao and all they could do was the 8th in the olympics. lin won't make a bigger enough difference for them to ask first.

He could finally become the first billionaire player. Then China could have him impregnate a bunch of girls and have their super team in 20 years.

Taiwan certainly is a country. The only people who don't think so are the apparatchiks in the communist regimes of China and the UN. Go do some research at the US Secretary of State.

People consider Taiwan a country, but nations (besides maybe the US) do not recognize it as an independent country. There's this huge debate about the Western countries wanting to use Taiwan as a puppet country, but that's too political for this basketball thread lol

at this point, boycotting their products pretty much results in you living under a rock for the rest of your life (if you don't count most computers, that is lol)

Good call. Why bring up Taiwan?
They are not relevant as a whole BBasketball team.
Their basketball players are playing in China anyway.

Taiwan is governed by the Nationalist party that lost to the Communists in the Chinese Civil War. Neither side recognizes each other. Taiwan still technically claims to be the real government of all of China, and its official name is "Republic of China." Taiwan originally held the Security Council seat for "China" at the UN, but it lost that seat after the other nations voted to recognize the mainland People's Republic instead.

Really, what constitutes a real country is pretty much a matter of semantics. Taiwan has all the qualities of a real nation, with its own government. It just lacks widespread recognition from others, which doesn't really mean much. Most countries recognize the People's Republic, but some still recognize Taiwan. America took a contradictory but beneficial position, recognizing the People's Republic but continuing its military alliance with Taiwan.

If some how this happens, it'll be worse backlash than the decision.

I read somewhere among I think thousands of countries, only somewhat around 20 are recognizing Taiwan. That's not a lot.

Take it from an American who's lived in China 8.5 years: Lin would be absolutely insane to do that.

Well I hope he never plays for the Chinese team. First of all, Yao had to give them a part of his earnings so he will actually be losing money. Secondly, the Chinese team will use him up and throw him away after they're done with him (see: Yao Ming). Why play for China year after year and wear your body down? they played Yao even if he was just recovering from injury, resulting in permanent damage to his body which always showed during playoffs.

Finally, he's not even Chinese, he's from Taiwan lol.

    It is too late.
With Yao Ming in the mix... they could contend for Top 5 to Top 3 if they convince Jeremy to join for some games.

Now they could again be out before or after the Quarterfinals.

Didn't you read his post? Country is semantics, the other countries are not pretending to recognize Taiwan simply because of Big Brother China. But it has its own government, its own territory, and its own people who consider themselves as separate from China.

then this should about the Sports part of the article.

BTW considering themselves as separate from China huh?
Then why did they vote for a China friendly president yet again?`
There has to be some feelings for the Mainland after all, may it be culturally or economics-related.
They are a country for sure, but I think status quo is the best what they can achieve that means country but not much recognition from the international community. Live with it. I did not make the UN! sheesh

I think Lin would be insane to do that.

I hope he doesn't play in the Olympics at all. He's better taking the summer off and working on his game even more so he can be an all star next year (and maybe bring the Knicks a championship).

If anything, Lin should play for team USA. His parents aren't even from China. They're from Taiwan. I'm not sure if Taiwan have a basketball team but Lin identifies himself as American first before Chinese or Taiwanese. On top of that, Lin's Mandarin isn't very good at all. He'll have communication problems with the coaching staff and his teammates.

So no, he shouldn't play for either China or Taiwan. And this is a disgrace from China to actually demand something like this from Lin. No wonder Yao doesn't play in the NBA anymore.
