This move means Gay will stick around with Grizzlies for one more year to show he's on Durant's level.

Top 5 protected in 2015? What were they thinking?

they sure paid a lot for a salary dump.

I expect a lot of stange choices by their new 30 somthing year old owner.

Cavs had all the leverage here and the Grizzlies couldn't send their 2013 1st, as they already owe that one to the T-Wolves.

Still quite the haul for the Cavs.

What's crazy is that Memphis simply could have signed some minimum guy (like Leuer) to play spot minutes when needed, but they instead opted to re-sign Speights, who a few months later they have to dumb to get under the tax. Nice GM'ing Grizzlies.

EDIT: I guess ownership change might be factor. Still, Grizzlies fans must hate this.

I believe the Grizzlies also have a 1st rounder obligation to the Wolves(via Rockets) from the Battier trade. I'm curious to see how this one is affected by that pick. Also, looks like the Rockets really want that cap space in the offseason. Otherwise, the lack of protection on that pick would be something Morey would certainly love to get.

Solid trade for Cavs. They needed another big man after Varejao went down.

Hollinger gave up a lot to dump a decent backup bigman on a good, short contract.

Good deal for the Cavs. Morey could've done it too. Maybe he's holding out for something better.

If Grizz include Ellington to that deal, their weak bench getting weaker. They simply have no backcourt option besides friggin Bayless now.

Cleveland and Phoenix could still be players in salary dumps going foward, but the Rockets now have the most cap space in the league (difference between PHO & HOU is negligible, though).

Surely there is another trade coming if they are also including Ellington.

Taking on $6 million of garbage contracts just for a pick you won't see in 2 seasons ? No thanks.

I'm guessing Memphis would rather deal with an Eastern Conference team who won't be hindering them in the playoffs at all. Besides, it's not like any of those players are that valuable. Speights might be interesting given how bad we are at PF, but that's about it.

I think Morey would've done this trade if the money was for this year only. He doesn't need to keep the pick. Just package it for his 2nd star in the offseason or something.

All this means is that Morey doesn't want to miss out on this year's FA market.

Does this mean the cavs have used their cap space for this year? If so what teams remain that have cap space and what teams are left over the tax threshold we can still fleece for something more valuable than a memphis '15 top 5 protected pick?

    Bulls, Knicks, nets, celtics?
