Is the really the case? We have traded Lin, and went under the cap by 9 or so million, and signed Ariza with cap space. Yet we can match Parsons, and then get our full MLE and BAE back even though we went under the cap and spent 8 million dollars on a player with cap space? If true, that's amazing for us. Sign Ariza, match Parsons, trade for a starting PF (Young, Anderson, Ilyasova, Smith) then use MLE, BAE and veteran minimums to PG and C positions. MLE targets - Augustin, Chalmers, Blatche BAE targets - Brooks, Nelson, Andersen, Okafor Team would be STACKED.
For about mle I would go for blatche, he can play the 4/5 and bae Ramon sessions. Or we night be able to pick up Elton brand and jameer on the cheap as well.
Unfortunately, this is not true. Before Ariza, the Rockets had the following, All their players still under contract + Parsons + Daniels' qualifying + Jeremy Lin's TE valued at $8.3mil + MLE + BAE. To sign Ariza, the Rockets must first renounce their MLE, Lin's TE, BAE(although this turns into room exception so overall a wash), to get under the cap. Then they sign Ariza with capspace, they will have nothing left over. They will gain at TE for Asik for a certain amount(Asik salary - non-guarnateed contracts coming back to the Rockets), but they'll be over the cap otherwise. However, they don't gain back their MLE in this situation. It's lost forever. That said... It is very plausible for us to keep our MLE and Lin's TE, since Washington's not really going to try extra hard to hold on to Ariza. We can work a 3-team deal with Asik, Ariza S&T, where Washington gets a pick from us in return for a S&T. In this case, it keep the Rockets above the cap and therefore allow them to keep their MLE. However, if this happens the Rockets will be hard capped at the Apron, which is 81mil, for the next year. IMO this is still much preferable to the above scenario because we can at least spend to $81mil, whereas without the MLE the Rockets can't even spend that much. My guess is that we are going to S&T for Ariza for this purpose. Perhaps NY's 2015 2nd rounder goes to Washington for their help in faciliating this deal.
Here is the Rockets salary cap situation with the following assumptions: 1. The Asik trade goes through 2. They keep everyone currently on the Roster 3. They sign both rookies 4. They match Parsons 5. They resign Troy Daniels Note: Obviously I'm guessing at the contracts of Daniels & Johnson but for Capela I used the rookie wage scale for his salary. Code: Dwight Howard $21,436,271 James Harden $14,728,844 Chand Parsons $14,700,000 Trever Ariza $8,600,000 Terrence Jones $1,618,680 D Motiejunas $1,483,920 Troy Daniels $1,500,000 Josh Powell $1,310,286 Omri Casspi $1,063,384 Clint Capela $991,000 Pat Beverley $915,243 Isaiah Canaan $816,482 R Covington $816,482 Nick Johnson $900,000 Total Salary $70,880,592 - The Luxury Tax Threshold = $76,829,000 - That leaves the Rockets $5,948,408 below the Luxury Tax Threshold Assets, (assuming the Rockets work out a sign & trade with Washington for Ariza by including him in a 3 way deal with the Pelicans, nothing changes in the deal between Pelicans and Rockets, a draft pick and an $8.6 million TE would go to the Wizards for their cooperation.): 1. Full Non-Tax Payer Mid Level Exception worth $5,305,000.00 2. Bi-Annual Exception worth $2,077,000.00 3. Jeremy Lin Traded Player Exception worth $8,500,000.00 4. 4 non-guaranteed contracts (Powell, Casspi, Beverly & Covington) worth $4,105,395 total 5. Probable lottery pick in the 2015 draft That still leaves the Rockets with the 15th roster spot left to fill.
I really do not understand this, how teams like the Nets last year, the Clippers every year and others are able to make so many moves and we always down to 1 or 2 and we're done..
But if Capella is over seas, his salary doesn't count as much against the cap, right? Daniels is not guaranteed. Casspi is not guaranteed. And Josh Powell? Seems like we're looking at $10 mil with those moves.
Daniels as of this moment is a FA. Capela will not count against the cap unless we sign him to a contract. Capela wants to come over but Morey is trying to tell him to wait a year. If we can work a sign and trade with the Wizards we will still have the BAE and the MLE to go get Birdman, Okafor, Rush, Nelson, Blatche, Daniels, etc. If we don't get the sign and trade we will have a hard time signing anyone. Especially if we match Parsons ridiculous contract.
So the 3 team trade would have to happen today before 11 right?? Or can Parsons be matched and we still conduct the trade after?
1. Josh Powell is non-guaranteed and is still on the roster. 2. Cabela would have to sign an agreement to stay over seas for him not to count against the cap. Since the Rockets no longer really need that cap space I assume he will be signed to the roster. Remember the Rockets initially wanted Chandler to stay overseas his 1st season but Chandler convinced them to sign him as the same year they drafted him. Cabela has more leverage than Chandler did since Chandler was a 2nd round draft pick and did not have a cap hold until he actually signed a contract. Cabela currently has a cap hold and will continue unless he agrees to sign an agreement to stay over seas. 3. Casppi is on a non-guaranteed contract and can be cut at any time. 4. Daniels is a restricted free agent and with interest from other teams (Cleveland) it is very likely that he would be willing to sign a non-guaranteed contract just to stay in Houston.
Agreed. I don't know if we'll get that lucky though. And would Les want to pay luxury tax for THAT team?
I actually think we lose our MLE if we sign Ariza outright. Keep in mind, I don't think any of the moves have been executed yet? So we can still do S&T's for them all, including Ariza, which would preserve our MLE by staying above the cap.
The Rockets won't pay the LT if they can help it. I'd look at it as a hard cap. The best thing that can happen today is Jones being traded. It'll mean one last big splash this free agency. I wouldn't consider Ilyasova or broke neck Anderson to be that.
Lin, Asik, Harden, Delfino Howard Ariza, MLE Other fan bases are probably like "every year the Rockets add a star. Almost had another one this year. Why can't our team be like the Rockets" PS. This does not apply to SA, Miami
