Now there was definitely a time when watches were a necessary accessory for punctuality and general utility. Digital ones were even able to tell you the date, do some math, light up in the dark, and even set an alarm. But my question is, are watches useful now that cell phones can literally do everything watches can do, and more? What's the point of having a watch (other than to look "stylish") when you already have a cell phone? Is there any benefit to having a watch anymore? How has the watch not become totally and utterly obsolete? I'm mystified by the resiliency of the watch industry. Are people seriously still buying watches? The only benefit I can think of is that checking your watch instead of your cell will save precious seconds of your phone's battery life... maybe?
You don't have to GRAB or PRESS anything to know what time it is in a split second. Plus, it is stylish and a sign that you still want to stay dressed like a gentleman and don't want to dress like a thug. I wear this one I got as a gift: Spoiler
I have a Rolex I like to wear. It's fashionable and makes me feel good when I wear it. Problem is it is very old, it was my grandfathers, and almost every time I wear it something breaks. Maybe I should sell it and collect the monies.
It cost me a lot, my chain and my watch, They say time is money but really it's not. Hello Mr. Nice watch.
I can think of several situations where I'd prefer to just look at my wrist, rather than pull out my phone to get the time. Believe it or not, there are plenty of scenarios where pulling out your phone may be considered rude.
This makes some sense, but when I think about it, I spend just as much time checking to see if I have any missed calls/texts (I usually have my phone on vibrate and can't feel it when I'm walking about) than I do to see what time it is. Checking your phone can sometimes be for other things than to see how much longer you have to deal with the people in front of you. But I guess you're right in a general way. A watch probably has its uses in an office setting for that very reason (rudeness).
Truth. I like being able to see what time it is without taking my phone out of my pocket. That and I can actually survive a day without my phone.
For me it's a style thing, not a status thing. One of my favorite watches is relatively expensive but looks cheap, go figure.

style, then i got used to wearing a watch everyday. feels weird if i don't wear my watch when i go out
I really like wearing a wrist watch. For one, I like to know what time it is (hate being late) and a cell phone is no where near as convenient or Timely (sorry, could not resist). For two, I'm not supposed to have a cell phone on me where I work. And yes, #3.... The wrist watch is the only thing jewelry wise that I wear and I think they are pretty cool in a retro sort of way. I berate my co-workers all the time when they ask me what time it is and tell them to "grow up and get a wrist watch, already".
As as been said already, it can be faster and more discreet than a cell phone. In addition, they are for those that prize craftsmanship and complex movements. A fine wristwatch is a manifestation of human engineering. I collect them for the same reason as antique firearms, handmade shoes and boots, and furniture.
...because when Im seeing a patient and need to know where I stand with time, its easier for me to look at my wrist than it is for me to take my gloves off, get my phone, check the time, and put my gloves back on to resume work.
For me, it's this and for the discretion point that others have raised. I feel like I end up in a lot of boring impromptu meetings (or rants from a coworker), where I need to know the time without pissing them off further. Most professors have the social skills of a slime mold.
