Coming off the injury is the key, methinks. I could see other GMs no wanting to waste a 25 man spot on a guy who might not be able to pitch from the get go and who might need time to get back to his normal self.

Question: Can this thread and the Trade & FA Speculation thread be merged into one offseason thread? Ultimate Astros: Astros sign four minor league free agents Astros County supplement
Mike Carp anyone? http://www.crawfishboxes.com/2013/2...d-for-assignment-the-houston-astros-should-go
More on the Mike Carp front (MLB Trade Rumors): Multiple Teams Interested in Mike Carp

The Mariners have until Thurs to deal 1b/of mike carp designatedfor assignment last week. Twins, Astros and Red Sox have some interest
— Nick Cafardo (@nickcafardo) February 18, 2013

I just don't see where he'd fit. They already have Carter, Wallace, Pena, and freidman as 1st/dh only types. He could play LF, but I imagine they want to get Carter and the martinez's at bats there.
I watched Carp play for Seattle. This is a young guy that you want to pick up if you can. He can hit for power. He can play 1B, DH or corner OF. Once he learns some plate discipline and becomes more selective, he could develop into a good hitter. Seattle had to make the tough decision after acquiring Ibanez, Morales and Morse in the offseason. I hope the Astros pick him up. I think he can help this team.
Welp, that ends that...

#Houston #Astros not pursuing Mike Carp right now. Appropos of nothing, but does anyone else think it is strangely coincidental that there is a guy in the league named Mike Carp and another guy in the league named Mike Trout?
I find it more interesting that its the same team that drafted Tim Salmon, who also won rookie of the year (unanimously) for them (their only 2 winners in their history).
The Astros traded former first round pick Mike Kvasnicka to Minnesota for rookie ball pitcher Gonzalo Sanudo. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/03/marlins-sign-koyie-hill.html Kvasnicka was the #33 overall pick in 2010 (1st pick in supplement round). It was a little bit of a head scratching pick at the time since Kvasnicka's main drawing point was the possibility that he could catch full-time. Instead the Astros picked him as a third baseman. While it wasn't a huge overdraft, it was a frustrating pick because mid-first round talents like Nick Castellanos, AJ Cole, and Kris Bryant were dropping due to bonus demands.
