In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and has been widely regarded as a bad move.
Bill Russel's Celtics and Magic Johnson's Lakers were both fast break-driven teams, and I think they did alright. He didn't say that defense wasn't important, only that an up-tempo team can compete for a championship.
what part of the show is the segment? I just found a link to watch espn 2....it is 14 minutes into it....is it toward the end of the hour show? or was it the first segment?
That started with great defense and even if we get a defensive anchor in Dwight, we are not great at being a fast break team though we're getting better. Those two are exceptions and knew how to play come playoff time, we do not have that kind of talent. The Lakers had a terrific team with great players from 1-8 in their rotation. We have arguably 3-4 great players, all starters.

"SAS: That's fair... because I felt like he was a marginal talent that had an incredible upside and 2-3-5 years from now he's going to be a really really really good player in this league. But I didn't think he was all they try to make him out to be last year" Huh? how does this even make sense? why would he have an upside if he was a marginal talent? i've always thought talent is something that you have that allows you to develop and the more talent you have the higher you can go. if you're a marginal talent, you upside will also be marginal, no? unless he's trying to take both positions and be able to say "see i told you so" no matter how jeremy turns out in 5 years. anyway, that's SAS for ya.
As for the 80's Lakers, they had very good D with Kareem in the middle and most importantly, Michael Cooper on the perimeter. his job was to 1) locked down the perimeter and 2)shoot the spot up 3, both of which he was great at.
Tim Legler and SAS were talking about Lin after Linsanity passed. SAS kept saying that Lin was a marginal player. Legler said Lin was definitely deserving of a starting spot and was definitely not a borderline NBA player. SAS replied along the lines that he didn't think Lin was borderline either, and then Legler replied 'that's what marginal means'. It's like SAS didn't know what the word marginal is or was trying to backtrack. Sad either way.
That suns team was coached by Mike Dantoni. I believe Gentry was the assistant coach. Gentry wil likely go to LA next year & be the assistant coach under Dantoni. Both of them are friends.
I think he said up-temple, which doesn't mean no defense directly. You can't win championships without defense, but you can always win championship when you score more than your opponents.
