Not going through the entire thread but how come no one is talking about the huge geopolitical ramifications of the islands in question? These islands are not only important for China and Japan, its also of the highest importance for the United States. I think we need to step in and make sure that Japan holds on to these islands. These sovereignty of these islands is key to denying the Chinese access to the pacific ocean. This is why it's so important to not let those islands fall into Chinese hands. These islands allows us to draw a line to contain the PRC, essentially stunting it's growth as a major superpower. This map shows the current sea borders of the Asian Pacific region, where the islands in question is considered Japanese territory. The islands themselves are tiny, total area is only 7 sq km (For comparison Galveston Island is 144km). However under international law a country can claim any area 200 km out of its coast as it's territory, irregardless of the size of the islands. For example, note circular area in the middle of the pacific ocean in the previous map. That large area is claimed by Japan and has a area of 154,500 square miles. That claim is justified by the Japanese through it's ownership of the Okinotori Islands. Here is a picture of Okinotori. So you can see the possession tiny islands allow us to make sure that any Chinese shipping have to travel through waters that are belong to our allies, trapping their navy to their coast while ours could move freely. TLDR: Irregardless of the legitimacy of Japanese claims, the US have to make sure these islands stay in Japanese hands. Making it impossible for China to overtake us as the most dominant nation in the world.
Natialization of the island means you take soverign of the island. The status quo was its a disputed island. If China acquiesce over This right now, 20 years from now Japan is going to claim China has waived the right to dispute because of the silence. Japan is known for such shady moves. The item on the agenda of the talk has to include that Japan recognize its a dispute island and as such the nationalization is invalid. The management excuse cited by Japan has been, which I think correctly, viewed as smoke.
Exact the same reason that China can not afford to lose those islands. It was laughable that some tards here thought the islands were just rocks.
Where are all my pro terrorism posts that you were going to find for me? You couldnt find any so you're changing the subject. My hypocrisy exposed! On to your next case netizen.
Tard, what do you mean we cannot afford to lose this island. We HAVE lost it for 100 plus years. We are not trying to get it back this time either. The strategic position of the island is over blown considering the US is right under China's nose in Taiwan and south Korea. The island cannot stop China either in the war time, not more than the 5th fleet.
It seems that you have a mentality fit for the last century. Unfortunately we do live in the 21st century, and doctrines like "containment" and statements like "making it impossible for China to overtake us" are not only ineffectual in the long run, but akin to a suppressionary tactic representative of oppression, which is in in itself contrary to the moral constitution of our nation.
#1 Quit calling people tard. I've seen another poster on these forums use the same tactics, and it's nothing but childish to me. #2 "We are not trying to get it back this time either." You're clouding the issue. That's like saying Mao didn't care about HK, when he sought to negotiate HK's return from Margaret Thatcher.
Moral constitution of our nation, I want to learn what that is. Clam down,I don't think he is serious with that post. Chinese fleet has already accessed west pacific right through Japan. Google it.
LMAO. The difference between the Europeans and the Asians is that after WW2, the Germans had the good sense to apologize for their war atrocities. Japan, on the other hand, had the notoriously high arrogance of refusing to apologize to its Asian neighbors, refuse to teach its own dastardly history to its later children, and repeatedly visit a symbol of its own war crimes before every visit to its Asian neighbors. Let's take South Korea for example. You think they're thanking you for colonizing their land and taking their women as "comfort women" aka sex slaves? Wake up buddy!
You are not informed. The island has been in japans's control for a long time, and that's why they insist on sovereignty over the island. Since the 70s when China and Japan normalized diplomatic relationship, china had always matainted it is a disputed territory. The current crisis stared with Shintaro's speech that Tokyo municipality would buy the island and make it inhabitable. It culminated in massive protests in china and the nationalization over the island in Japan. No Beijing is not negotiating it like Hongkong for a handover. That is not what is going on diplomatically. Pay attention to the news.
Okay fine, you got me on that one. In this generation, at least the progressives in America still value freedom. The right wing are just a bunch of smeagols in pursuit an imaginary ring.
"The island has been in japans's control for a long time" Does that make a difference? Britain controlled Kowloon island for ~140 years, and HK for 99 years, even longer than Diaoyu Islands have been under Japanese control. The point is that those lands were taken by force, but the age of colonialism is over and the lands deserve to be returned to their rightful owners.
I suppose the right wings are all about freedom, the power of free choice? To the contrary, the left wings, the progressive as you call it, are all about big government. I am not aware that has changed in this generation.
Different hongkong was a land lease. I am playing devil's advocate here. Hear Japan out for a sec ... They don't contest China was the first discovering the island and put it on map. But they do contest that China has never actively control the island. Japan's control over the island started more than 100 years ago and resume 40 years ago. They contest just like the Portugese cannot claim America just because Columbus discovered the America, China cannot claim the island. What's wrong with that?
You're talking to an self admitted right-wing nut in Kojirou, no point trying to steer him away from the Japanese propaganda that he has embraced for life. Personally, I am somewhat surprised by the brazen move the Japanese government has made. I had, for one reason or another, presumed this was going to be one of those crappy standstills that wouldn't end for another 50 years.
You mean the power to launch wars on false pretenses? The power to torture people of foreign nations that are trying to defend their lands? The power to violate nearly every international treaty on war, including but not limited to the Geneva conventions? The power to amplify cronyism to heights never ever seen in the post WW2 generations? The power to destroy the American economy so badly that future generations will be fortunate to have a standard of living even equal to what we have had, if it happens at all? The big government argument is nothing more than distraction. Progressives seek a competent government.
