It wasn't so much that defense was bad back then per se (in fact it was really a more physical game). The main difference was that everyone played like the Suns back then, getting the ball up and down the court and looking for the first open shot, rather than allowing defense to get set. Teams averaged about 10 more possessions per game back then than they do now.
