WTF son? I gotta go with Chains, because they were harsh man... even though Pearl Jam has an impressive body of work, its a tough comparison since Layne Staley died.
Due to all these band polls, I voted Kill Yourself. Saying that, I think I'd go with Alice in Chains over Pearl Jam, though I like both bands. Honestly, I may take Soundgarden over both. Oh and I know I'll get flamed for this, but I never was big on Nirvana.
Totally Grungey up in here man, I love Nirvana, I dig Soundgarden, I like PJ, and I LOVE Chains. Chains is deeps mayne. Gnome Sane?
I voted "Kill Yourself" 'cuz I really thought it was one of these EMO'ish bands moes would have listened to while growing up in Califas. I was wrong. There is no such band. Awww... that's what SHE said?
The Kill Yourself option as a poll response was very tempting, but I don’t feel I know you well enough to be giving that type of advice. I have the vast majority of PJ and Chains respective catalogs, and have sided with the man in the box. It was a difficult decision but one I feel I can live with. To elaborate further would just be a waste of our time.
Pearl Jam by a million miles. They made what I consider the greatest album of all time- 10. They did slip a bit after 10, but much better than AiC. And better in concert, too.
I voted Alice in chains because I liked them way before I got into pearl jam. Now I love pearl jam but in a close call I went with chains. Staley had one of my two favorite voices in rock history.
AIC's tunes, while good, were mostly pretty sullen and moody. PJ's tracks have the power to uplift as well as brood.
I voted for PJ but of the "Big 4" of grunge, I would rank them like this (in order of preference, of course): 1 - Soundgarden 2 - Nirvana 3 - Pearl Jam 4 - Alice in Chains However, all 4 bands very solid.
AIC Even I don't consider them the best, but the Smashing Pumpkins will always be my favorite from the era/genre.
Nirvana & Pearl Jam created the scene. Without them, I doubt AiC and Soundgarden get the airplay. "10" was the greatest album of the bunch. The fact that they went downhill fast with later albums is sad, but Eddie's shennanigans after he made it big was telling. AiC was a good band with some nice tunes, but nowhere near the trendsetter of the first two. Of course, I wasn't 7 when this was all coming out, so I recall how the grunge culture was introduced.
