Ugh. No help tonight from anyone in the West. All contenders (except Phoenix) are playing well right now.

I made a couple of changes to the Magic Number Chart. yaofan07 had the great idea to add the Last 10 Games record to the chart, and I agree that it’s nice to see how the teams have done compared to each other and the Rockets over the last 10 games. I also changed the look of our non divisional opponents. Before I had put a N/A for their division record and an X for if we had a division tie break over them. Now I’m just leaving those blank, so our divisional opponents stand out a bit more. I think it makes the Chart look a bit less cluttered. Well, we didn’t get a whole of lot of help tonight. There were only 3 Contenders playing, and they all won. We slipped to the #5 seed, but we still have home court advantage over the Nuggets. I’m still angry at the Thieves for rescinding the Tyson Chandler trade. The Hornets haven’t lost since he came back to the Big Easy. Tonight Chandler and crew got to show the Thieves that his toe is just fine. Give the Thieves credit. They kept the game close through 3 quarters, but then Chris Paul took over. He wound up with 21 points, 13 assists, and 6 steals in leading the Hornets to an easy victory. Tyson Chandler chipped in 12 points and 8 rebounds. How you like Chandler’s toe now, b****es? It’s the seventh straight win for the Hornets, who move up to the #3 seed. Expect them to stay up there for the next week, since they have a very easy schedule and could easily push their win streak to 11 before they visit Houston. The 76ers hadn’t been playing well, but they lucked out and drew the Grizzlies at home. They took full advantage of a nicked up Memphis squad and eeked out a win to get back to .500, which is almost good enough to have home court in the East. Rudy Gay (poked eye) and Marko Jaric (rolled ankle) both sat out the second half with injuries. No word on if they’ll be able to play tomorrow. The Mavs hosted the Wizards and looked for a nice win after they got blown out by the Hornets. The Wizards kept it close for a half, but the Mavs destroyed them in the second for an easy win. Josh Howard was out sick, but Dirk had 34 points and 9 rebounds and Jason Terry had 33 points to pick up the slack. With the Mavs winning, and the Thieves and Grizzlies both losing, we are now down to 11 teams on the board. Memphis and OKC have officially been eliminated from the Playoffs, and I’ll stop covering them on a nightly basis unless they’re playing another Western Conference Contender. For those who don’t know, I moved to Seattle 5 years ago after 32 years in Houston. I have always been a die-hard Rockets fan and hated the Kemp-Payton-Karl Sonics teams that used to abuse us and eventually caused the breakup of my beloved 1995 squad. I never became a fan of the Sonics even after moving to Seattle, but I know a ton of Sonic fans. I’m still incredibly bitter over the way the team left Seattle and moved to OKC. David Stern gave the city a big middle finger in my opinion. This is similar to what the Rockets went through during the Save Our Rocket days. I still believe the team would have received a new arena if ownership had any interest in staying. I also direct a lot of my ire at Clay Bennett and Howard Schulz. When the Oilers left Houston, football became a dead sport to me, and I sense the same thing among the basketball fans I know up here (except the transplanted Rockets, Wolves, and Suns fans I know). Nice move, Stern. The economy is tanking, and the Blazers are the only team in the Northwest. So for the foreseeable future, I will continue to refer to them as the Thieves. At least now, I don’t have to cover them as often. The Wolves brought an 8 game losing streak to Portland, and the Blazers appeared to take the game for granted as they thought about the Lakers visiting on Monday. Instead Portland got a tough fight and nearly lost. Brandon Roy had another solid game with 31 points and LeMarcus Aldridge had 15 points and 11 rebounds in leading the Blazers to a 95-93 victory. The Warriors took on the Bucks in Milwaukee on the last game of a 4 game road trip. It was a high scoring affair (when isn’t it with the Warriors?) and Golden State nearly rallied to a win, but the Bucks outgunned the Warriors in a 127-120 shooutout. Golden State loses a Magic Number, which officially closes them out. That’s it for the scrub teams. Now we hunt the real teams. Up next: the Suns, the #8 seed, and a Playoff berth. The Rocket have a tough week coming up, but they start it off with a game they should win when they host the Grizzlies. We are, of course, 1-2 against the Grizzlies this year, but we are such a better team at home against scrub teams. Still we cannot afford to take Memphis lightly. Hopefully now that they’re eliminated Memphis will tank for the lottery, but I’m not counting on it. It’s a tight field right now, and we need to capitalize on every Probable matchup we have left and knock down Magic Numbers whenever we can. More importantly the Grizzlies are a division opponent, and we need to make up some ground on the Hornets and Spurs with our division record. We also need to try to stay ahead of the Mavs in this regard. Also on tap for Sunday: Jazz at Raptors, Suns at Spurs, Nuggets at Kings
Long time lurker here, and this will be my first post in quite a while. I just wanted to say thanks for your excellent, daily coverage! You have amazing statistical analysis skills, and you have a great way of summarizing the events around the league on a nightly basis. Plus, I enjoyed reading about the backgrounds to how OKC earned the name, "Thieves." Now I can clearly see why the Nuggets are Enver. But then shouldn't the Warriors be referred to as Golen State?
i appreciate the new look chart. much improved. i know we're aiming for the suns right now, but i still want them to take down the spurs so we can inch closer to them. beating MEM and a SAS loss would mean we are 1GB from #2 seed. also, it looks like another HOU/UTA series is becoming more possible by the day. i dont know if i can handle that. a fully healthy utah team can do a lot of flopping and grabbing. they're always a bad match up against us. and i hate to say it, but it's not much of a rivalry if they keep beating us.
Thank you very much! The whole thing with Enver started as a joke with my wife years ago. I know there are Hollinger stats that show they are a decent to good defensive team, but it's hard to doubt my lying eyes when they were routinely in shootouts of the 127-119 variety. They might (and I stress might) not deserve the name Enver, but I can't stop myself from calling them that. You're spot on with the Warriors, and others have mentioned this as well. Maybe it's a question of intent. The Nuggets do want to defend, and they attempt a semblance of it most possessions. The Warriors do not care about defense, and that's backed up from their coach. They have the mentality of "we don't care if you score, we'll outscore you." I don't think losing a 'd' and becoming Golen State would bother the Warriors. They'd shrug their shoulders and say "you think we want or try to play defense." I think the name 'Enver' would grate on Nugget players and their coaching staff. Besides I also have a great fondness for the Warriors after the ass kicking they put on the Mavs in 2007. It's not consistent, but it does allow me to be snarky. That's the best I can justify it.
everyone has to hope and pray that the utah jazz will be the #3 seed and new orleans the #4 seed while we stay at #5. i would love to play new orleans in the first round.
13 more games for clinching a playoff spot. Go Rockets go. From here on out, we can hope for Suns losses and Rockets wins and it will all be gravy .
You've got to be more optimistic. I want the #3 seed and either the Nuggets, Mavs, or Blazers with home court advantage. I'd love to see a Jazz-Hornets first round matchup with Chris Paul vs. Deron Williams going head-to-head.
no doubt, that would be one mighty fine series. eagerly awaiting your recap of today's events, the logjam at the 3 spot is intriguing.
I'll post the Magic Number update after the Nuggets-Kings (probably not until after we put our daughter to sleep and have dinner). Not looking good for Enver at the half. In the meantime, here are the head-to-head records of the top 8 teams in the Western Conference. The cumulative record against playoff teams is the fourth tie breaker after head-to-head, division record, and conference record. They also come into play in the likely event that 3 or more teams are tied at the end of the season. Nice to see the Rockets have the second best record in the bunch (after the Lakers). It looks like we have the toughest remaining schedule here. Better seal all the home games and wish for the best on road. I don't like our chance for the #3 seed.
Wow, huge blow for the Nuggets tonight and I am honestly surprised. Tomorrow's game is even more meaningful for the Rockets.
western conference is so tough now...a team can drop from 3rd to 7th position over night... nuggets lost tonite...lol..good for the rox...wish rox good luck tmr...
they'll be fired up for sure. problem is, without martin they are very weak inside. nene and petro is all they have. yao, scola, and landry will have a clear advantage in the paint. if ron and shane can do a number on melo then all they have is chauncy. i'll take that. plus they're on the second night of a back 2 back with travel as well.
Currently FIVE teams hovering in the 10 to 11 Games Behind range. Incredible playoff position jostling in the west as always.
