it is with some equal measures of bemusement, regret, outrage and resignation that i have watched the vomitous display of douchebuggery (pun intended) byt the left on the subject of sarah palin this weekend. Thank you Messrs Batman, SamFisher, DaDa (!) Deckard (!!) mc mark, glynch, bejezuz, Sweet Lou, et al for demonstrating, definitively, that there is no overriding moral philosophy that governs your worldview, except rank partisan politics. The zeal with which you have posted and parroted the most outrageous (attempted) smears from the KosKids has been a most edifying spectacle, and then to watch the speed with which the story jumped to the front page of the NYTImes and other "respectable" media outlets... ...but i don't think there is some vast left wing conspiracy. the message is too consistent, too coordinated. no, as the goombahs say in Staten Island, the Fish Stinks From the Head Down (witness today's coordinated attacks from MSNBC, NYTimes, etc. on the vetting process, today's Partisan Pivot). so, let us examine this stench, and it's ramifications for the campaign, and the political prospects for whoever is the victor in November. First, IMHO, the Obama campaign has made a profound strategic error in making these attacks on Sarah Palin- they just don't realize it yet- and the reason they don't realize it is because they've never understood the conservative mind. the left hoped to make this election about "Hope and Change." When McCain's jibes about Obama's lack of experience, and gentle tweaking of Obama's celebrity began to hit home, Obama decided he had to hit back, hard, in his big speech. problem is, McCain had already decided the experience arguement had run it's course, and Palin's selection was a move meant to wrest at least some corner of the "change" mantle from Obama. A few days ago, I wrote that Obama's choice of Biden would make the campaign a referrendum on Obama's judgment. Obama is attempting to make the Palin selection reflect negatively on McCain's. The attacks on Palin's expereince, the emphasis on "scandal", and the salacious glee (Teenagers! Sex! Pregnancy! Hypocrisy!) with which the latter has been pursued, will have another, unintended effect however. Each attack on Palin's experience will only serve to highlight Obama's lack thereof. Each attack on McCain's judgment, will only serve to reintroduce Wright, Ayers, and Rezko to the public. And every personal attack on Palin and her family, will only serve to galvanize the republican base, and it is this last point that could spell trouble for the Democrats. Palin was already very well received by the religious right. This issue, far from being viewed as troublesome by the right, only highlights the fact that both Palins chose LIFE in difficult circumstances. Coupled with Obama's vote on the Born Alive bill, and Abortion is now front and center in this campaign. John McCain has always had trouble appealing to the SoCon wing of the party, but Obama (or his surrogates) has, again, done his work for him. The republican base is now energized, and united, and will turn out in droves for McCain and Palin in November. Palin isn't going anywhere. Democrats better hope this issue does.
Meltdown noted . . . you couldn't have put this in the other 15 threads? basso I'm willilng to bet that Palin ends up withdrawing - I'm saying it's a 25% shot right now obviously so odds would be in order. You want in? I'm also willing to bet you on the general election. Name terms. EDIT: Thread bookmarked for future hilarity.
Uh, yeah, whatever....... Once you are in the public eye, your background is going to be thoroughly vetted. It happens to all candidates. Palin is no exception, if she made poor choices, they will be known, if she lied or cheated, it will come up, if she is under investigation, the voting public has a right to know. I have no sympathy for Ms. Palin, she chose to say yes....let the vetting begin..... Everyone has to go through it....and let the public decide how meaningful it is.... I do find it funny that I get lumped in with liberals though....because I am voting Obama..... My voting record would speak otherwise...but....why should we let the facts get in the way, huh? Basso and TJ: 835419 DD
Why does every thought that enters your brain deserve its own thread? Seriously, start a blog like TJ.
Couldn't this whole ridiculousness have gone in the thread in which you are responding to? Good Lord.
I like how basso takes the moral high ground by starting a thread bashing people whose beliefs aren't encompassing any overriding moral philosophy that governs their worldviews. Great reference to A Confederacy of Dunces though if he actually understood the book he's probably glad the author killed himself upon completing it. But other than the fact that Da Dakota is sometimes a little whacky (but what do I know?) the guys basso hates seem to go out of their way to help people in the GARM and often when they don't agree with them (Those no-morality based informed worldview Bastards!). But basso's worldview thread does have a legitimate point: Palin isn't going anywhere, because we won't let her. She rocks my world. BTW I'd never seen or heard the term douchebuggery before and I think it's a sad state of affairs when a right-wing nutjob comes up with something new for all malekind. I'm pretty sure "douchebuggery" should be hyphenated though.
Amen, there may be hope for you after all. But a "cadre of liberals" in the US is pretty funny too. If you think there's been a liberal conspiracy in this country since... well our revolution then you really don't know anything about the US or the rest of the world. May God shed his grace on thee. Edit: I meant Calvin Coolidge and not God, but someone will forgive me.
Neither have I - basso is intentionally missing the point - the key narrative here which I will post again is: McCain chose a person w/o doing his homework, apparently at the behest of hardline social conservatives. This is undeniable at this point. Even worse, McCain himself was apparently not comfortable with the pick, and was just caving. These scandals don't reflect as poorly on Palin as they do on McCain - he's starting to violate the rule of VP nominations ("First, do no harm") and flunking his first test of leadership.
not only does he start a new thread, but he references his old thread as if it some basis which we should start the discussion. the basso never disappoints
