This is why I'm not a big fan of religion. Any religion. People tend to use it as a "moral" excuse to hate and exclude people different from themselves.

I still think McCain would still do a decent job, though. I doubt he agrees with every single thing his "spiritual guide" says.

There is no war between the two big religions of the world Islam and Christianity. It's people like him on both sides who make it their life long goal and to spread the hatred to ignorant/illiterate (90% of the citizens) people around the world who do not know the political and religious history of both Islam and Christianity. It's a small group of people like him who have "high jacked" the entire religion of Islam and in the eyes of ignorants made it seem like it is a large terrorist organization, that all billion+ Muslims are after the western society, the western culture, the western policies and the western lifestyle. It is people like him on both sides who create negative urgency amongst their fellow citizens (victims) in the Western world AND in the Muslim world. These citizens (without any knowledge of the other side) then blindly follow the words of these lunatic fundamentalists and hate on each other thus creating a WAR.

People like him sad to say will always be around centuries after centuries. It is up to us as citizens of this World that we share to go out and achieve knowledge about different religions, culture, race, gender and learn from each other so that when fundamentalists like him come around you will not be easily persuaded and challenge him/her with the knowledge you have.

    Bingo.

I am Roman Catholic, and I sure don't agree with everything the Pope says.

Sure, people use religion to do evil. However, people use other things for evil-like science, humanism, etc. It's just that people will use things as an excuse to hate. Look at evolution and how people have used that to demonstrate how some races are lower than others.

I agree entirely. I think Jesus agrees with you, as well. :)

There's a church in New York whose motto is: "Religion Kills" :)

to the extent any faith tradition is about exclusion, i would argue it's not of God.

I think you did agree, actually.

Or did I misinterpret this quote?

I didn't say it right...People do use religion to do evil...but I disagree with the "religions are like all other human social constructs." Christianity is viewed as a religion, but I believe it not to be man made, but God's revelation in His Son Jesus.
    I hope this clarifies it.

I see. We disagree then, on how to define (or what defines) a religion.

    Ehhhhhhhh...

I'll give you that to a degree, but I honestly think religions are far worse offenders.

Look at it this way: what percentage of the violence in the last 2000 years of human history was "justified" by religion, and how much of it was "justified" by science and humanism?

I don't remember a war that happened because people didn't believe in evolution. I certainly remember wars that happened because people didn't believe in god X.

Science and humanism don't exclude people by nature, while most religions do. That's the problem.

    Hitler...Stalin...Mao Pot
Again the problem isn't necessarily religion, but what people do with it. Sure some religions teach hatred...but others teach peace...but even the peaceful ones get abused.

But I'm also wondering what will happen next...will people who hate religion begin to oppress those who practice their particular faith all for the cause of of peace.

"I am the way, the truth, and the life...no one comes to the Father except through me." Those who don't believe are excluded.
