yeah cause judging it based on cop making you walk a line is much more accurate and scientific cannot believe you guys dont have random breath testing, not sure how many decades ago we got rid of walking straight lines and balancing
Smeg, for many, many years during my driving career, it was legal for me to drink a beer while driving the Vomit Comet. Then, for a long time, it was legal for me to drink a beer in the car if my girlfriend was driving, drinking a Coke. You have no idea how Texas was while we were younger. I'm not saying it's logical, from a scientific view, but it is hard to change that Texas mindset. I don't drink in the car, myself, and DD wasn't, but how many here have seen someone buy a tallboy at a 7/11, and slip it into the slim paper bag, just big enough to cover it while driving? All of us, right? Old habits die hard.
A "lie detector" measures stress responses to questions. It has never been an effective way of definitively saying whether someone is lying, which is why they aren't admissable in any court in the land. A breath test, on the other hand, will absolutely tell you whether your blood alcohol level is above or below the legal limit, which is the offense charged. There's no comparison between those 2 tests in terms of accuracy.
Ah, but back in 1970, they were seen as the latest tool for determining the accuracy of what someone said. What you say about their use may be true today, to an extent, but they are still used. I don't find the "breath test" to be as fool proof as you apparently do. I mentioned the lie detector because that incident always amused me. Not at the time, but later. I wasn't sure I could game it, but I did. It was a trip... very intrusive, and something I found personally insulting. It wasn't needed to determine if I was qualified for the job, took no account of previous experience and references, and was given because of a blanket company policy to use them for new hires. And they weren't used on executives that were trying to get positions, either. It was like a page out of George Orwell.
Not to mention that before DWI's became so profitable to the State, most cops would let you find another ride, or follow you home. It amazes me how much the media can dictate how people feel. I'm not saying DWI shouldn't be a crime, but the penalties have become ridiculous. And, no. I'm not doing this stupid argument again. For those who don't recall, you're just dumb and believe anything people put in front of you without bothering to research it.
