Isn't Swift's agent Walker's agent? Given these are options 1 and 2, we couldn't put leverage on Swift that would not be transparent. Yes, might as well wait as long as possible with Swift unless Walker is about to be dealt to someone else and we have enter that fray. Then we might say we need an answer, and Swift would know we are serious as his agent would know what is happening on the Walker front. Kind of difficult position for us, we don't want to PO Swift, Walker or their agent.
No. Swift's agent is Andy Miller. Walker and Bobby Simmons have the same agent, Mark Bartelstein. http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/sports/3254177
Maybe the announcement will be on Wednesday? CD would give him at last a week provided the offer was made on the same day he visited.
Swift may not be ready to make a decision for awhile... (via realgm) http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/basketball/nets/story/327236p-279732c.html Nets seek Swift end to chase BY OHM YOUNGMISUK DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Stromile Swift Shareef Abdur-Rahim While Shareef Abdur-Rahim toured Sacramento, the Nets were preparing to talk to Stromile Swift about their power forward vacancy. According to two sources, the Nets will meet with Swift today in Las Vegas, where the team is playing in a summer league. Even though the Nets' top target is Abdur-Rahim, they cannot afford to wait too long for his decision. Abdur-Rahim, who spent two days with the Nets in New Jersey last week, was in Sacramento yesterday and may still visit Miami or San Antonio. The Nets have until July 29 to use their trade exception worth nearly $5 million in a sign-and-trade deal. By using their trade exception on either Abdur-Rahim, Swift or, perhaps, Donyell Marshall, the Nets can save their mid-level exception - worth roughly $5 million - for other free agents like point guard Keyon Dooling. The Nets likely will have to execute a sign-and-trade to land one of their coveted free agents since it would allow them to sign a new power forward for up to six years and $38 million - one year and $10 million more than the mid-level offers. Swift, who has visited Houston, which can only offer him its mid-level, would seem like a better fit for the Nets than Abdur-Rahim. While Abdur-Rahim has a much more refined post game, the 25-year-old Swift is three years younger and his more athletic game suits Jason Kidd. Some are concerned about Swift's attitude since his potential has been largely untapped. The 6-9 Swift would provide many of the same strengths and weaknesses Kenyon Martin brought, but Lawrence Frank may prefer Abdur-Rahim since the two have a relationship dating back to 1997 when they were together in Vancouver. The Nets likely will wait for Abdur-Rahim's decision, but their meeting with Swift shows they will not wait too long. "There's a time element for everybody - a team time frame and player's time frame," Nets president Rod Thorn said. "And I wouldn't be surprised about anything."
I was actually in the process of posting a reply similar to this when I got interrupted yesterday. Not to beat a dead horse but Mr Thomas illustrates my point perfectly. Outside of the top 3 spots in the west, you are competing with everyone in your conference for a playoff spot -not just the division. My intention was to simply point out that I would not be shocked if a SnT with Memphis was doable. A good GMs job is to improve his team anyway that he can. One of the easiest ways to do this is via FA and the draft. Memphis has cap restrictions preventing them from using FA to improve their team, that is where I thought we could come in. If we traded an expiring contract and a pick Mem gets something for Stro and we get one of our targets. I don't care what they have done to build their team in the past several seasons.
Well SAR & his wife said they would make a decision by Friday at the latest. None of the PF has signed, I assume once one goes the others will start falling like dominoes.
With SAR, Swift and Walker (and to a lesser degree Marshall).....whoever signs with a team first is in essence going to set the Market value there for that position. So you are right, those other PFs might be waiting to see what SAR does.
probably. SAR signing in NJ will help the rockets situation since it takes that option away from swift and marshall. after that swift might be the next to sign after chosing between the rockets and the knicks. walker will sign with whoever swift decides against. marshall ends up going to the bucks. anyway, thats how i see it.
Absolutely, especially when he signs with us! But the deadline stuff should of been adlibbed, "We could have a decision from Stromile AS EARLY AS Monday."
There isnt one apparently. According to the Feigen email that was posted on the board the Rockets just want to know form Swift sometime very "soon". But no specific date has been given. I bet SAR is the first PF to sign somwhere, he establishes "market value" and then Marshall, Walker and Swift start to seriously look at other teams.
I am getting a very bad feeling about this off-season like the Beltran Situation. Us sitting around waiting for Swift to make a decision while he is wined and dined other places. We don't seem to be courting anyone else as a backup. As Swift drags this on, other potential big pieces have signed or made commitments and we haven't had a visit from another free agent and we are supposed to be so "attractive" to the free agents. Am I the only one worried we will be left holding our Johnsons while we are stuck trying to figure which two leftovers we can piece together to split the MLE with while the one we waited for laughs (its all about the money to Swift and Beltran) all the way to the bank.
Even if we don't land someone splash-worthy this summer, I think we're still in a good position. We have a lot of expiring contracts that will be more attractive at the trade deadline next year. I think we can get by splitting the MLE between backups at PF and SF, essentially repeating like last summer. If you remember, a lot of people really wanted Barry. In retrospect, not signing him didn't turn out so bad.
Very true, we dodged a bullet here. Had this happened I think you could have penciled in Swift at NJ using their TE in a S&T to Memphis. Looks to me New Jersey wants SAR first, than Swift, we want Swift and then Walker. DM is probably 3rd choice for both teams. I don't see NY in the running for Swift, though maybe for SAR with a crazy offer which then could put Swift to the Nets. NY could also get in the bidding for Walker, but I think the Celts would rather move him here or SaC and I am sure AW would not protest that. Still looking OK for 1st choice Swift (MLE) or 2nd choice Walker (S&T) to us. But that could change (NO, Atl, other darkhorse). Yes, major dodge Milw got Simmons than looks to have locked away Gadz, they probably out of the big money PF frays at this point.
I couldnt agree more...we hear on a daily basis offers being made and all the Rockets are doing is waiting on Swift to make up his melons. Yep, we are extremely attractive with FA's flocking to Houston with no invitation. Hurry up Dawson and screw up the offseason!!!
Have you also heard that no one can be signed until July 22nd? Or perhaps you've noticed that the current "commitments" involve teams with cap space? Or there are teams re-signing their own FA's? Maybe you've observed that almost none of the signings involve PF's? Or maybe you need a reminder that it's a high possibliity that Rose, Webber, Houston, or Finley could be cut anytime up until October? All we have is an MLE. CD could be on the phone 24x7 but nothing is going to happen until the teams with cap $ run out of it. Take a break.
