cute, but i hope that wouldn't be your first choice when in the czech republic. i am absolutely not a beer snob, i'll drink the **** out of any passed my way, but a budvar, properly poured, hayes, is ART. and mcmark, that's the ONLY beer garden i know of in the city and i'm actually thinking about opening a gasthof in brooklyn, i think it is sorely needed.
the beast grand cru? that beer with 18% alcohol?? I split one of those with my buddy, and we were both thrown
Yeah, what a bright spot Prohibition was WRT the moral decay of our society. We simply must bring that back, it was such a monumental success. Also, just exactly how does saying no to beer please the Lord? Never mind... I don't want to derail this fine thread. I'm a big fan of dark beers, but I enjoy just about anything. When I'm buying though, I usually don't bother with the light stuff. I don't drink a whole lot so the price isn't that big a deal. Shiner and Newcastle probably top my list. Sometimes get a beer called Nut Brown Ale. Love Guiness, but usually prefer to go black and tan with it. I liked to hit the microbreweries when I lived in Colorado, but there's not a lot of that in Houston.
Is there another comparable beer garden in the city? I used to live on 35th and astoria blvd! sweet neighborhood. edit: just saw your post thegary. no that's probably not what i'd drink in the czech rep but its certainly nice in ny. i love that place. its like a freakin oasis in nyc with the big stone walls and tables. when i first lived in astoria i was on 27th between 23rd and 24th, so it was a very nice short walk. grub across the street at elias corner is good as well.
Beer? Not that familiar... Wheat: Hacker Pschorr Lager: Pilsner Urquell Dark: Sam Smith's Nut Brown Ale IPA: Sierra Nevada Best Commercial Home Brew: Anchor Steam Best Bang for the Buck: Maredsous 8 Best Beer to get drunk on: FogHorn.
They give an awesome tasting/tour every saturday at 1.. check it out, me and my buddies go every week and bring lunch with us.. good times.. http://www.saintarnold.com/brewery/tour.html
Anyone else like the Jack Daniels Hard Cola? Regardless of its positioning next to girlie beers like Zima, Smirnoff Ice, etc in the grocery aisle, it is good.
it's next to the girlie drinks because it is a girlie drink. if you wanna whiskey & coke, man up and buy yourself a handle and a 2 liter. Makers preferably.
Sam Smith's Taddy Porter might be my favorite right now. Others: Guiness Shiner St Arnold's (the darkest one...forgot the name) Maudite Leffe (in small doses) With their kindred foods: Singha (Thai) Kingfisher (Indian) Asahi (Japanese) Has anyone been to Brickskellers? When I lived in DC it was the place to go for beer. Around 1100 different kinds.
Saint Arnold's Brown? That stuff is SO good after you pour it and it warms up a little bit... especially with fried chicken..
You know, I like hoppy beers like "Stone IPA" and such, but rarely do I drink a beer that I do not like. If you are ever in Specs and find a beer called "The Beast - Grand Cru" from Avery Brewing Co, try it. It's a 22 oz bottle and it will run you about 9 bucks. It's 18.1% and tastes pretty damn good. I was brewing beer a few weeks ago and this beer convinced me that you shouldn't drink and brew beer.
They've been out of The Beast for about 2 months now.. Turns out the brewery actually stopped making it for a while because they ran out of a certain ingredient.. It should be back shortly.. that was one helluva strong beer..
yeah leffe's good when you're sitting at a cafe in brussels, but i can only drink it like i drink pyramid apricot - although my wife loves the stuff. i agree with the 'kindred foods' part although i've usually found its a combination of 'do as the locals would' and 'those are the beers they have at the restaurant.'
The Beast, lol. I had some of that about a week ago, friend got a bottle of it and brought it to a party. It was surprisingly tasty, although they could pick a better name. Brings back bad memories of Milwaukee's Best.
