    2014 #1 Pick

    http://nbadraft.net/players/andrew-wiggins

    Birthday: 2/23/95
    NBA Position: Small Forward
    Class: HS Junior
    Ht: 6-7
    Wt: 205
    Hometown: Toronto, Ontario, Canada
    High School: Huntington Prep

    NBA Comparison: Scottie Pippen

Strengths: A freakishly gifted athlete with a remarkably smooth offensive game ... Just about impossible to guard at this level, due to his athletic ability ... Can effortlessly glide around any defender that plays up on him ... Quick first step, and very long strides ... Explosive athleticism ... Once in the paint he either leaps over the defense for a soft runner, or throws down an electric dunk; either way, it's generally a high-percentage shot ... Has great size for either wing position, with a frame that is capable of holding a good amount of weight ... Long wingspan, recently measured at 6'11" ... Fantastic shooter on the perimeter ... Already has NBA range ... Quick trigger, with beautiful shot mechanics ... If the ball isn't in his hands, he likes to spot up in the corner, where he can get off an open shot on cut the baseline for an alley-oop play ... Also has the ability to create separation off the dribble for a pull-up jumper ... Good passing instincts and court vision ... Defensively, he gets a lot of deflections ... Uses length and anticipation to come up with a lot of steals and blocks ... Father played in the NBA ... Extremely young, and will only get better in time ...

Weaknesses: Despite having immense skill and athletic abilities for a player of his age, there are still several concerns from people who watch him with regularity ... Looks complacent at times on the court ... Inconsistent motor ... Needs to add more strength, though his body looks very good for a player his age, and this shouldn't be a problem in a few years ... Ball-handling ability is unrefined, but has a lot of potential ... Doesn't display a lot of toughness and isn't a very physical player ... He's been receiving a considerable amount of hype on a multi-national scale since he was 13 years of age, which can derail the development of a prospect as it can lead to him trying to be a big celebrity instead of a great basketball player ...

Overall: Wiggins has an unreal amount of potential and he'll be under the eye of every scout over the next few years ... Considered the top player in his class by most recruiting services, and has 1st overall pick potential whenever he enters the NBA draft ...

Notes: Measured 6'7 (in shoes) 190 lbs, with a 6'11 wingspan at the 2011 LeBron James Skills Academy.

For those too young to know, former Rocket Mitchell Wiggins is his father. Mitchell Wiggins was a very good role player with the Rockets -- athletic, quick, long arms and good defensively. He was a key player for the 1986 Rockets that went to the NBA Finals... he's the one who jumped up and almost tipped in Ralph Sampson's buzzer beater that beat the Lakers and sent the Rockets to the Finals.

He also was one of two Rockets (Lewis Lloyd being the other) that was busted for cocaine use in early 1987, derailing the potential of that team.

    http://www.nytimes.com/1987/01/14/sports/lloyd-and-wiggins-of-rockets-banned-for-drug-use.html

Consider Mitchell is his father and his mother is Marita Payne-Wiggins, a former Canadian Olympic track star, and his skills already are where they are.... this kid could really be something.

Watching him play, I see his dad's fluidity and silky-smooth moves, but his dad was offensively inept compared to this kid. His dad was known for great defense and was good on the break. During that 1986 series against the Lakers, he and Lew Lloyd were tearing the Lakers up at one point.

The Raptors will win the 2014 lottery to keep son of Mitchell in his hometown for basketball reasons.

I remember the 86 finals as my first Rockets memory. The Wiggins/Lloyd suspensions was an unfortunate second memory. :(

That 87 team was on a roll before that cocaine bust. They looked like a champion.

Wiggy was GREAT defensively and returned from his suspension as an adept offensive weapon as well. I've heard about his son for awhile now and curiously await his arrival at the national scene.

Hope he doesn't go the way of Gee Gervin, et al, as sons of ballers who never realized their potential. Gee had so much ability but couldn't put it all together...same for the Dembo kids...Eric, Fennis, etc...

Yes they were. Huge letdown when that happened.

One of the biggest disappointments for me as a Rocket fan, along with Moses being traded, the playoff loss to Seattle before the titles, the Stockton shot and the Yao injury against the Lakers.

If only Morey and Leslie wouldn't be stubborn, we could just tank and draft Noel / Shabbaz next year and Wiggins the year after. That's good way to start rebuilding, if only..

Except that you don't automatically get the #1 pick when you suck...

His dad was good streak shooter and an ace defensively as well. That Rox team had SOOO much potential. They smoked the "SHOWTIME" Lakers & then 3 of them smoked their way out of the NBA. SMH

He is going to change classes like Noel is and be elgible for 2014 draft. Many believe he will re-classify and move up a grade.

Saw him play for the first time live when he came to my college for a random tournament

He is really non-chalant on the court and seemed like he didn't give a shet. But holy shiet he wrecked everyone with ease. His jumper is really smooth and he took a lot of them.

He seems like a really non showy kinda guy, I think he will be like TMac
