If KJ does show substantial ability and upside (which is the primary issue here, not salaries), the Gilbert Arenas Provision salary allocation is actually helpful toward the Rockets.

Remember, NY and CHI didn't want to deal with the back-loaded salary hit because of tax consequences in year 3 with an already expensive roster locked up. HOU is in a different situation.

First, with the cap rapidly rising due to TV money, even a "max" cap hit in year 3 on McDaniels' deal may not matter too much to the team.

Second, HOU's primary cap purpose is flexibility to chase stars in 2015 and 2016. KJ counting only as the MLE in these summers is actually a good thing.

This. Also, like someone said, you have to think that Ariza is getting traded if KJ is at least half as good as he seems. That would let us keep Smith and McDaniels, and we'd probably trade Ariza, Jones, and the Pelicans pick for a point guard. (I hope).

Yep. I alluded to this earlier, but good to have it pointed out again.

In the Rockets case (pursue of another stud in 2015 or 2016) it actually HELPS the Rockets to have a MLE type of deal backloaded to 2017 to give them more cap space in the first two years.

Gives them great flexibility to move Ariza this Summer if they can. If McDaniels looks like a future stud, or at least as good as Ariza is, the Rockets suddenly become major free agent players this Summer or next.

Kinda makes the whole "Rockets going hard at KD" thing even more threatening to the league.

    dobro1229 and Carl Herrera,

KJ's agent could put a wrench in your plans. He already refused a contract with Philly; he might do it again this summer.

KJ can flat out take our qualifying offer for a 125% raise on a guaranteed contract and wait until payday on the 3rd year. I actually think this is the agent's strategy. Take the non-guaranteed offer for the first yr, knowing you likely won't get cut. Then take the guaranteed qualifying offer after your rookie year should negotiations as a RFA fizzle in 2015.

Then you have another year under your built with more negotiating power.

Could be wrong, but as I recall, KJ would still be a RFA next year as well.

If KJ is only half as good as he seems, then he's the worst player in the NBA. Have you even looked at the guy's shooting numbers? Ariza has had his struggles but KJ is an end of the bench player for the Rockets right now.

This guy is this year's Jordan Hamilton. Second round pick with awful stats in Philly. Stats indicate that he is a poor shooter. Not a first round pick either, so I am perplexed at why everyone believes he could someday become a poor man's Ariza and are fearing his imminent departure into free agency.

Well the question is why the **** would anyone pony up the mid level for McDaniels? Right now he's like Ariza 0.5 with below average 3p%, and Ariza himself only got 7M after balling out of his mind for an entire year. Its not like he will play big mins this year, he has to beat out Ariza, Brewer and Kpap to get burn.

In my scenario, after the second yr, KJ would be an unrestricted free agent. I'm willing to bet that that is the agents' new counter strategy to what the OP quotes said GMs are doing to 2nd rounders. And KJ is on record saying "Screw that!"

A second rounder can gain full UFA faster than a first rounder. You just have to be willing to take an unguaranteed offer the first yr -- already done. He then does a guaranteed second year via signing another qualifying offer.

    thx Madano for the assist.

That's not how I read that. KJ McDaniel's wouldn't have met the tenure requirement, therefore he would still be a RFA, even after signing the QO.

Prigioni is a good shooter and decent playmaker. McDaniels is an athletic defender, a GOOD defender. These moves may not seem great compared to what most of us hoped for but I don't think these players will do anything but help us. Maybe not as significantly as we want but they will be of some benefit. We got better, simple as that.

That's not right. If KJ signed an offer sheet next summer, he'd be restricted in 2016, and 2017 for that matter, if he did it again.

If KJ is determined to make big money next season he needs to steal as much vet knowledge from Ariza (man to man & help D) and Brewer (leaking out & transition O) as he can. Like the trade, coveted this guy in the draft. We don't need offense from end of the bench - KJ brings hustle, athleticism, defense and rebounding - on a team that now encourages all of that. What's not to love?

    Yup.

This may be wishful thinking, but I think it's Morey's goal to get KJ locked into a lesser deal and use him as another asset in the event something good pops up. People are talking about how a max deal before 2016 is going to be a bargain after it and everyone is going to spend spend spend in 2016, but what about the team that gets a somewhat productive player to sign a decent deal before 2016? Won't that player be an especially hot commodity when the market shifts and guys like Exum are making 18 mil a year when KJ will be doing most of the same at a 1/4 the price?

tenure requirements means getting upped on your Bird rights. That's not what I'm talking about

You are confusing signing an "offer sheet" with taking the "qualifying offer." Or like finsraider, you are confusing players trying to gain Full Bird rights. KJ doesn't care about fastest way to get Full Bird; he apparently cares about fastest way to be UFA.

trust me. I know when I'm right about CBA stuff. Ask Larry Coon, he asked me once to review his CBA in the second version before publishing it, way back in the day. My credit at the bottom of the cbafaq still exists for my edits that he asked me to provide, along with Patricia's!!! I still have never met Patricia Bender. Bucket list

If you don't trust my credit in Larry Coon's faq, then ask BimaThug, during my cfnet cbafaq checker tenure with aelliott before BT relieved us.

And notice Carl Herrera and dobro1229 have not disagreed.

One of these names is mine:

    http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#revhist
bottomline: KJ can take a one-year qualifying offer this summer to become a full UFA in Summer 2016. And I think his agent figured this out to spite the GMs doing what the OP quotes tried to do

Sorry I don't see any way that Kj's agent risks taking the QO.
It was one thing playing in Philly - a team with only 3 -4 nba players in the whole roster and another playing in Houston. Kj has upside and potential but he stood out A LOT over there playing alongside D-leaguers in meaningless games when a win over NY was celebrated like a championship. Now he will have to fit in a contenders system will have to work on his game and play alongside actual nba players. Still upside and potential but he won't stand out so much and his payday even for this summer will take a big hit.
Risking again for one more year? Too much.
