Why not just keep rotating in fresh players throughout the game? Hopefully Dwight gets healthy, and we can just keep rotating between: Dwight T-Jones D-Mo J-Smoove Brewer (Small Ball PF) I think people get too caught up in specific positions like PF and C, but just having those 5 guys all getting minutes in the front-court causes all sorts of problems for other teams. Lots of different skills and different looks and mismatches can be exploited using different combinations of these guys.
From a financial perspective, lenders will still see the same amount of guaranteed money coming in. Smart financial planners wouldn't worry too much about this type of situation occurring, as the change in up front cash flow doesn't really change the fact that he is still owed, and will be payed, the same amount of money when it all said and done.
tjones, smith, and dmo skillsets are unique enough that it wouldn't be a bad thing keeping all of them. Tjones and Smith are the most similar, but Smith is a better passer, and TJones looks like a better rebounder at this point, and looks a little quicker. It will give McHale options in the playoffs, allow him to tinker in a way we normally haven't been able to. One series he might play one more than another, depending on matchups.
If you caught McHale's interview yesterday on 790 listen in again how he makes a point to say that "We need to see about getting D-Mo and Jones" on the court together. I know defensively last year those two really were pretty terrible at defending the paint, but that might have to be the future for this team moving forward. Those two guys have got to get better at playing alongside another defensively. (Even though I think this is an overreaction to Dwight, but its a signal for how this team will need to transition Dwight in to the back portion of his career as far as usage goes) I also think that this signals even more of how the Rockets cannot sacrifice all of their draft picks and young talent for short term upgrades. They need to continue to build while competing with James Harden, and a veteran version of Dwight. I know it seems like Harden is here forever, but the last thing you want is for it to be a year or two until Harden becomes a free agent, and he's on an under-achieving aging roster with no young upcoming talent & no way to improve with draft picks.
