Hi guys I don't live in America so I found this comment pretty interesting from Nik Stauskas: "I understand that I'm a rookie and I'm white, so people are going to attack me at all times," he said. "Just coming out there in the game, I felt it right away." I understand here in Australia any black baller literally instantly gets reps straight away on the court (whether he/her has done anything at all yet is no relevance). Is this the same all over the world? Other races are just considered not as good in a basketball setting? Stereotypes obviously exist for a reason but usually they are better in our local environment.
Top right? Looks like it could be Mike Brown. I think Stauskas shouldn't have made the comment - only because discussing race in America is a no-win situation. It's just going to get the Twitterverse charged up, and nothing good has ever come from that.
honestly, not sure what the problem is. He's right, there's a reason why every white guy who can ball is called the Great White Hope.
To me, all the quote means is that the opponents test him and defend him overly aggressively. It doesn't happen as much to black rookies, because they all look alike, so get lost in the crowd.
well the way I read it, people disrespect him because his white. The same goes for Jeremy Lin, certain commentators didn't come outright and say it (aka Steven A Smith) but they thought he didn't deserve the contract because his asian. I think the stereotypes do hold true in some respects like the Soft Euro is another one. Race is a no win situation I agree but I've found people aren't really receptive to reverse racism as well.
My goodness, he's soft. In any field, you've got to earn your credibility. He has already lost if he think he doesn't need to fight for everything in an ultra-competitive field like pro sports.
But the quote is about the game and the opponents, not the media. might be adding too much to the quote. It's very common for all rookies to be disrespected and challenged to see if they have the mettle.
Is it really? I remember Larry Bird use to say he felt disrespected if they sent a white defender on him..........this is pretty common place I would have thought where black people are percieved to be better players in general
