This is my task. Any insight would be helpful. I'm not really sure where to start or even contemplate how to create a folder structure that can keep things organized. It is nearly 18 gigs worth of data spread over 5000 folders.

Turn folders that are similar into separate drives and share them back out to the network? You can then create a ****ty script that will map the new drives at log in for all users when they log in. (Assuming you're on a domain)

Ha, that's what I came here to say :)

I'm a SharePoint Engineer at MSFT, so let me know if this is something your company ever considers doing and you have questions that I could help with.

    sharepoint is a p.i.t.a.

we've moved to a new project tracking system that doesn't have folders and files are easily searchable, but it takes getting used to and folder-philes will complain even though searches are infinitely faster and more intuitive.

print them out and file them in a cabinet -- that way they'll be there forever and you'll know where they are

Are the folders just randomly named and populated? Do they pertain to particular projects or users? It is hard to make suggestions without more details.

What's in each folder and why are there 5000?

I would search for similar name, type, or size of files, then COPY to organized folders of those organized copies.
