Fox is dying to have someone like Bill Simmons. So do Turner (TNT), Time Warner (SI), NBC, CBS and any media company with a desire to get into sports. They all have as large if not larger bankroll than Disney (ESPN). Also, if Bill Simmons can go out to build his own network, with the right investor, he can totally do it. There is no guarantee of success, but there will be tons of people willing to invest in him.
Well - if what he said was true, how is it "humbling". It essentially proves his point that ESPN is in bed with the league protecting scummy behavior left and right.

I call bull****. From what I've read Bill just said what we all know to be true. The NFL knew what was on that tape.

History lesson 101 boys John Peter Zeiger .... freedom of the Press.....was a reporter locked up for printing that the royal governor was taking bribes. The next day he was jailed leading to a famous court case declaring freedom of the press. All Simmons needs to do is prove it.
1. It was a personal opinion piece under a brand he built, using language that's no different than the language he's used in previous pieces. There is no slander in an opinion piece, just opinions. Editorial pieces call people liars all the time. 2. He didn't trash his employer. He did dare ESPN to suspend him, which given that it wasn't part of the normal context tends to point towards some sort of gag/soft reporting order. ESPN makes boatloads of money off the NFL... that Simmons got a suspension that was longer than Ray Rice for stating his opinion of Goodell as a liar does nothing to uphold ESPN's credibility, what it does do is give the impression that ESPN is still in the NFL's pocket. 3. Daring your employer to punish you is not necessarily common or wise, however saying it is the basis for a 3 week suspension (longer than ESPN employees got in the past for racist comments or insensitive comments regarding gays and domestic violence) smacks of corporate censorship. Should Simmons have been suspended? Maybe, if you're arguing his language was a problem. However, they're arguing the violation of a "journalistic standard"... what violation was that exactly? Outside of the language he used, the only things he said was his opinion of Goodell's honesty. In an editorial piece, that's not libel or slander. A bad look on ESPN and the NFL. #freesimmons

Biting the hand that feeds them. Of course Goodell is a liar. But journalism isn't about integrity and honesty. It's about what pays the bills. As long as Goodell remains commissioner, ESPN has to kiss his ass.

I don't understand that. The NFL can't lock out ESPN like they could a company not paying to air their games. Why does everyone point to that as proof the NFL dictates ESPN discipline?
Wait wait... so Ray Rice gets a two-week suspension for knocking out a woman and Simmons gets three for criticizing Goodell??
