I think the explanation is pretty simple:
When Lin is feeling it he lets these type of shots fly. When Lin is timid, he second guesses his shot and doesn't shoot as often. Hence we have a high shooting percentage from catch & shoot because he only shoots them when he's feeling it. Anecdotal evidence is his recurring reluctance to shoot those open shots.

It would be nice to see statistical data on how many shots he passes up....It does seem he does that quite a bit.

He's definitely a bit gunshy @ times. I remember hearing the mics pick up Howard yell "shoot it" a few times @ Lin during games. He needs to be more like Ginobili and take about 14 to 15 FGA per 36 instead of < 12 per 36.

People will b****, like they do about Dragic now, but in the end it isn't that all that relevant.

Morey's rebuilding effort has seen him cycle through a huge number of players in recent seasons-- Lowry, Dragic, Scola, Martin, all the way down to Terrence Williams and Hasheem Thabeet. When there are so many ex-Rockets, a least a few of them are going to do well in their future stops just as a matter of the law of averages.

The relevant question is how well the actual Rockets do, not how well ex-Rockets do.

If he's still here... It'll be a miracle if he's still with the Rockets after the summer. It's better if he's gone so that some loonies here calm themselves down. Then we'll just watch and sigh once again just like we did after Lowry and Dragic were gone. I just hope it's not too much this time. On the other hand, Rockets might be able to get Lowry once again...

Parsons isn't here because Rocket fans overrate him. He's had a huge amount of games where his FG% is super low this season. The only reason his stat line is the way it is is because he's played very heavy minutes each game and have taken a lot of shots as the 3rd option.

That's a nice explanation, too bad Lin shoots more than players like Lawson and Kemba Walker, and "as often" as Curry and Irving (2.4 3pt attempts off catch and shoot a game).

Goran Dragic and Kyle Lowry are better than him at this too.

Have you forgive Parsons for that 0.9 sec shot? Have you forgive Harden for the whole series of bad D and also bad O in the first couple of games? Have you forgive McHale no adjustment in the first two games?

I think J Sizzle have forgiven them already. They're not Lin after all... Saying that, I'd still want Lin and Asik traded/salary dumped to get that 3rd star. Love is still the answer to so many questions. Bosh would be fine too. :)

that doesn't actually effect shooting percentage, it really only effects volume

Completely didn't expect to see Lin there. Pleasantly surprised.

i dont care what he does as long as he does it with confidence

deer in the headlights Lin is absolutely shocking to watch, but when he's aggressive and got that swagger about him he's a more than decent player.

Lin keeps making it into the top echelons in numerous categories but still gets criticised and judged by biased eye tests. Lin is just plain and simple a good solid scoring PG. He's being played in a sub-optimal system and he goes through patches of low confidence and form, like any other player. He gets attributed as being inconsistent and streaky, yet statistics show he's no worse, and in many cases, better than some of the more lauded players in certain shooting, passing and defensive stats. Much inconsistency in his play can also be attributed to being on a tight leash, inconsistent playing time and not being given a defined role in the team.

Lin isn't a superstar but he still has tons of potential and given a chance in a better system (for him), he can improve to be a vital piece in challenging team. Sadly, it's never going to be here at Houston, in this current set-up. Houston could definitely do with losing the Lin's wage this season and Lin could flourish elswhere. Can definitely see a big market team like Knicks or Lakers taking a chance and going for Lin.

Lin, in the right system, could be like Ginobili -- the #3 option on a playoff team.

Yes it does. If he takes mainly the shots he's confident of making that are completely open, the shooting percentage is artificially high. Shooting when not confident would certainly have a lower make % than shooting when confident.

These results are filtered for Catch and Shoot total points > 200. That's a pretty low threshold considering that Clay Thompson has scored 728 on catch and shoot, Dirk 680, Korver 591 and Fry, Ariza, George, JR Smith, Anthony and Love are all of 500 points. Another 18 guys over 400 points. In total there's 59 player that scored over 300 points on catch and shoot last season.

If you change the filter to total points > 250 then Parson's is #22. If you filter by Catch and shoot points > 300 then Parson's is #19. If you filter by Catch and Shoot points >= 375 then Parsons is #14.

On the Rockets here's the top 5 in Catch and Shoot Points :

    1. Parsons 392 (59.8%)
    2. Harden 282 (56.9%)
    3. Beverley 263 (56.9%)
    4. Lin 214(60.8%)
    5. Garcia 190 (53.7%)
