We can't afford to pay him what he currently makes. We can't force him to stay beyond his contract. We can't afford to let a top 5 legit rebounder and rim protector walk without compensation. So, can we afford not to trade him? It was never about "getting rid" of him. It was about not giving him away. Letting him walk on his terms and the terms of another team is the same as giving him away. Asik will have a little more leverage this year in saying where he wants to go though. Not Carmelo leverage but a little leverage.
