Apologies if this has been posted in this thread, way too long to sift through. Here's an account of McHale's coaching abilities from Anthony Carter... "It was a learning experience. He didn’t really know all the X’s and O’s, but he had a good assistant coaching staff that was helping him out with a lot of plays. He kind of let us run whatever we wanted. He was trying to draw plays, and it was like a little Etch and Sketch. Like a kid just messing around. … He just gave the clipboard to the assistant coaches sometimes." Says it all. http://www.nba.com/rockets/fanmail/fanmail_001224.html I just sent an email to the rockets voicing my displeasure with McHale. Not that they will even care most likely, but its good way to release some frustration if anyone else would like to join in
PATHETIC pathetic decision if true. Absolutely shambolic McHale is a clueless incompetent coach. One of the worst coaches in the league without a doubt. He has already wasted away 1 prime season of Howard and Harden. This franchise will go nowhere with this clown as coach.
McHale is called "Refrigerator" by many Rox fans from China because there is a refrigerator brand named Haier in China. McHhale sounds pretty much like Haier. IMO, McHale is even better than a refrigerator because he freezes up our most talented offensive player--James Harden.
Agreed Big Timer, we are stuck with McHale for at least another 2-3 years. We have to have a total meltdown/collapse in order for Morey and Co. to get rid of McHale. So fellow Rockets fans get use to seeing the Gary Kubiak of basketball.
Morey didn't fire McHale because Morey needs a real vacation for once. He deserves it too. Let him have an offseason of peace.
Who will be the new lead assistant? I see morey bringing in a stats guy to take care of the play calling, adjustments, while McHale concentrates on keeping the egos in check. If we get a hidden gem to be our lead assistant, our team will be fine.
A stats guy is probably already on the staff. Finch? And I don't think Morey is as keen on statistically driven schemes as we think. He knows how important they are in coaching but he also knows it's not the primary factor. I don't think he wants to do anything differently coach-wise than what we've seen from the Spurs. The RGV are a case study, not an incubator. We're eying a defensive specialist (like Morey mandated with Sampson) or an X's and O's guy capable of making in-game adjustments. I'd hope any assistant or associate added, plays a major role next year.
Plus the fact that we had to bring in so many other people to help in the coaching--Hakeem, CD, Elie When the plug is pulled though, it will be hard fall for McHale
Way too many lapses on offense and defense. Doesn't have the respect of players and his bench creativity is severly lacking. I just don't see the top coaching talent to match the team talent. The players need someone that they respect and nobody on the team is coming to McFails aid saying he's a great tactical coach.
Yeah, apologies are probably needed as it's misleading and was probably posted 5 years ago. The article links to an article that is more than 5 years old. He says that it was a learning experience. He had only coached 30 games before that season. After 4 full seasons coaching I doubt that's the case. http://www.rockymountainnews.com/news/2008/dec/08/nuggets-need-be-wary-minnesota-wednesday/?partner=RSS
I am shocked to hear McFail will be back. This is definitely the worst decision Morey has made ever after hiring McFail in the first place. Morey should finally take the fall if Rockets still get bounced by 1st round next season. He might be amazing talent recruiter/finder/trader but obviously he is not good at coach evaluation or recruiting at all. Having the same coach over and over with the same result (1st round exit) will prove that Morey failed at finding Rockets the right coach and he should take the fall if nothing improved next season.
This team running wild. I expect them to only get worse. The substitute teacher that everyone likes because it's a free day.
I'm still having difficulty comprehending what sane person would allow this path to failure to continue.
Same here. Rockets made a very very stupid decision. I never liked his playbook. He focused on only iso offense. I miss Rick Adelman because he has a lot of variety offense. Other teams know how we play on every possession because we have always played isolation games.
