(Woj) Sampson to become University of Houston Head Coach

How about soon-to-be-retired Shane Battier as our new assistant coach next year?

 

Some of you people surprised that Sampson is leaving immediately must not understand college basketball. It IS a huge deal to miss out on that recruiting season in college ball, and then you really have to give him at least a whole first season as simply a mulligan.

No thanks, you don't aggressively go after someone, quadruple a paycheck, and then just allow him to miss out on recruiting if you can help it at all, especially in The American.

 

Good riddance. I've never liked Sampson, dating back to his days at Oklahoma.

 

Will this change anything for the Rockets? How much influence did he have on their style of play on both ends?

 

I wonder if Sampson wasn't feeling the Rockets front office style? Or maybe he'll try to use our formula of three's and paint points in college. I guess we'll see good luck to him.

 

Sampson's leaving had nothing to do with the Rockets. The only reason he coached in the NBA was because he was blackballed by the NCAA. Sampson wanted to be a head coach and UH learned of his interest and the rest is history.

 

He was essentially the defensive coordinator. Morey said on 790 that he came up with all of the defensive gameplans for this year. It sucks that he's leaving before the end of the year but with him leaving this late, we at least have the benefit of having already established gameplans for every team in the league.

The main (solvable) issues on defense this year were in the beginning of the year. Asik would always go under screens and he wouldn't challenge a lot of midrange stuff. Dwight leaves his man a lot more to challenge shots and the rest of the team wasn't used to having to rotate to his man.

You forgot LJ Rose also. Best shooter on the team was Brandon Morris, but he is a senior.

 

Until we actually play some resemblence of defense we won't make it to the finals.

Not true. Tony levine makes ~$800k and before him Kevin Sumlin was making ~$1 million.

James Dickey was making $450k, so in that aspect, Sampson's salary is more than double his predecessor.

 

Yowza, that's Lawrence Frank daily reports money. No wonder he took the job.

 

My mistake, i didn't know about Levine's pay raise.

Regardless, this is still pretty impressive for UH basketball. Definite step in the right direction
