Because the pilots don't pay for it, the airline does! Of course passengers and pilots think it is ridiculous.

Meant to respond to who you responded to. Was really an affirmation of what you said.

Why would someone fly the plane to crash it in the Indian ocean. Also wouldn't someones radar pick it up. It seems pretty scary if radar can't pick up such a big ass jet.

The Malaysian military, or some in it, are saying their radar in the Straits of Malacca picked it up. The Strait isn't that big and beyond Sumatra it is the Indian Ocean which is unpopulated so not much reason to invest in radar there

Primary radar only gives position and no altitude or other information. Almost all modern airports rely on the transponder from the airplane (that apparantly was shut off) to get the planes position, altitude and airspeed. Some places don't even have primary radar because it is so outdated and unlike an integrated air defense radar, commercial jets WANT to be seen to get vectored and given their airspace.

So when they say it fell off of the radar they probably mean the transponder was turned off.

Naw, it is factual and relevant.

I've never been to England, but is it actually factual that northerners are generally dumber, Never been to America south either, is it true that southerners are generally dumber too like the stereotype?

Went back and re-watched LOST series premiere.... Eerily similar situation.

What the pilot in the show said (radio went out, bad turbulence so they turned around only to be way off course) the search parties would be looking thousands of miles in the wrong area.

The former head of the National Transportation Safety Board offered a new theory as to why the plane went missing but continued to fly for several hours.

"Information has come to light that may indicate that there's a possibility ... that there was some sort of decompression of the oxygen system on the aircraft, incapacitating not only the crew, but the passengers, and the plane continued to fly for several hours," he told CNN.

I guess the event that could have caused this decompression could have also disabled the transponder as well, but I'm not sure that explains that part.

Someone (I nominate Mark Bowden) will write an incredibly interesting book about all this.

So the pilots accidentally switch off the transponder???
How do we explain the plane turned around? If the pilot noticed the decompression and turned around he should have made the distress call and wore his oxygen mask. Apparently he didn't.

If the source of decompression is close to the where the transponder is, it might be possible for the transponder to stop working?

Depending on how serious the source of the decompression is it can knock off a lot of equipment and also at that altitude and without oxygen, they really have seconds to take action before they are knocked out unconscious. What if the navigation equipment and auto pilot equipment went haywire? What if the pilots tried to turn the plane around to land back at KL airport once they realized they were not going to make it? In case of an event pilots are trained to take corrective action first and then establish communication. What if they were knocked out before they could communicate?

BTW, if the planes did fly for hours after communication with tower was lost and it did turn back and was flying over Malaysia once again, that could explain the relatives reporting the ringing tone on the passenger's cell phones. It rang for couple of hours before finally not ringing at all.

A lot of scenrios/specultions out there and we will never know until we find the plane and black box. Even then, we might not know everything.

One of the pilots got to be the suspect by now. The guy has flight simulation at home, that's strange.

If that theory is true, then why not focus more on where the plane could have landed? Why divert it intentionally just to crash it, when you could just crash it immediately, if that is your goal?

Exactly. This is the craziest thing.

I half expect a video to be released fairly soon by Al Qaeda or some other terrorist cell, showing some of the passengers bound, sitting near the plane, in the middle of the desert somewhere.

Agreed, 777's sell for 30+ million even when used. That could also be the end-game of the person responsible.

I personally find the terrorism theories hard to believe, because the responsible group would have claimed it by now. Right?

Piracy is a very real possibility.

From what I read, captain Zaharie is pro Anwar the opposition leader who was sentenced to five years jail few hours before the flight took off. He may deliberately flight the plane around and suicide to protest and show the world how incompetent is the Malaysian government.
